This volume, originally published in 1992 by Basic Books, provides for the first time a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of therapeutic integration and its clinical practices by the leading proponents of the movement. After presenting the concepts, history, research, and belief structure of psychotherapy integration, the book considers two exemplars of theoretical integration, technical eclecticism, and common factors. The authors review integrative therapies for specific disorders, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, along with integrative treatment modalities, such as combining individual and family therapy and integrating pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. The book concludes with a section on training and a look at future directions.

About the Author

John C. Norcross, PhD, ABPP, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Scranton, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and a clinical psychologist in part-time practice. He is past-president of the APA Society of Clinical Psychology, the APA Division of Psychotherapy, and the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration. Among his 25 coauthored books are Psychotherapy Relationships That Work, Clinician's Guide to Evidence-Based Practice in Behavioral Health, Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Psychology, Psychologists' Desk Reference, and Systems of Psychotherapy: A Transtheoretical Analysis, now in its 9th edition.

Marvin R. Goldfried, PhD, ABPP, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Stony Brook University, where he was involved in developing its graduate program in clinical psychology. In addition to teaching, supervision, and research, he maintains a practice of psychotherapy in New York City. He is a diplomate in clinical psychology, fellow in the APA, and recipient of several awards from various professional organizations. He is past president of the clinical division of the APA, the psychotherapy division of the APA, and the Society for Psychotherapy Research. Dr. Goldfried is cofounder of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, founder of AFFIRM: Psychologists Affirming Their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Family, and founder of the Two-Way Bridge Between Research and Practice.

Description: This book describes psychotherapy integration, which looks beyond specific therapeutic approaches to find common factors underlying behavior change. It also explores specific disorders/populations, along with training guidelines in psychotherapy integration. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: The authors state in the preface, "the aim of this third edition continues to be a state-of-the-art, comprehensive description of psychotherapy integration and its clinical practices by some of its distinguished proponents. Along with these integrative approaches, we feature the concepts, history, training, research, international themes, and future of psychotherapy integration as well."
Audience: The intended audience is "practitioners, students, and researchers." John Norcross, a professor psychology at the University of Scranton, has served as president of the American Psychological Association, and Marvin Goldfried is a professor of psychology at Stony Brook University. The contributors are from academic institutions in the United States, Ireland, Argentina, Israel, Norway, and Portugal.
Features: Beginning with an historical perspective, the book notes that psychotherapy integration took hold in the 1990s, although early efforts began as early as the 1930s. However, there are still debates about the effectiveness of any one theory, and between 25 to 50 percent of clinicians do not have a specific theoretical orientation and would rather be known as eclectic. Part II discusses integrative models. Many of the treatment models are equally effective in general and in relation to specific disorders. Therapies that do not focus on a patient's distress are less effective than the approaches that do. The therapeutic relationship is significantly related to outcome. In multimodal therapy, therapists feel that the more one learns about themselves, the less likely symptoms will reappear. Some research suggests that clients may benefit more from a purer form of therapy (in the short run) as opposed to an integrative approach. Part III focuses on integrative therapies for specific populations and disorders. Dialectical behavior therapy is an approach where new developments are encouraged. The cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy has grown in its treatment of mood disorders because psychotherapy research helped define new treatment options. Integrative child therapies refer to using different philosophies and techniques in individual and family therapy. Part IV explores training issues. Training in psychotherapy integration involves theory integration and assimilative integration. The book ends with a consideration of future directions.
Assessment: This book is excellent in its discussion of integrating theories to create better treatments for clients. It considers various models, along with their use for specific disorders and populations. Clinicians and researchers will find this book extremely useful.
