About the Author

C. Edward Watkins, Jr., is Professor of Psychology at the University of North Texas, USA.  He is editor of the Handbook of Psychotherapy Supervision (Wiley, 1997), co-author of Theories of Psychotherapy (1996), and has authored numerous articles about psychotherapy training, supervision, and education. He is a Fellow of Divisions 29 (Psychotherapy) and 17 (Counseling Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

This edited volume contains contributions from 52 authors considered experts in their domain of psychotherapy supervision. The chapters are divided into six main content areas, including conceptual and methodological foundations, approaches to psychotherapy supervision, training models for psychotherapy supervision, specialized forms and modes, researching psychotherapy supervision, and professional, ethical, and legal issues. Although the book is a first edition, it serves as a comprehensive update of Allen Hess's 1980 Wiley publication, Psychotherapy Supervision, Theory, Research, and Practice. The book is intended provide a current examination and review of the field of psychotherapy supervision, with an emphasis on theory, training, research, and clinical application. As stated by the editor, its purpose is ""to provide an informed and informative treatment of many of the key areas that have been and continue to be so central to the enterprise of psychotherapy supervision,"" and to do so while giving ""more emphasis to supervision research."" The editor accurately claims that the book is targeted toward mental health professionals and advanced graduate students, and it appears suitable for a variety of subspecialty areas, including clinical, counseling, and school psychology, and psychiatry and social work. Many of the chapters will be of interest to seasoned professionals and those with a particular interest in quality supervision and training. The book is well organized and contains many relevant figures and tables. Thorough author and subject indexes are provided, and each chapter includes pertinent references. The editor of this fine handbook hasgathered together a skilled and wide-ranging group of experts, thus providing a first-rate, scholarly resource that will likely become the reference of choice for those interested in the theory, research, and practice of supervision. The book is readable and often engaging, and seems quite valuable in the diversity of approaches and applications it presents.
