If you are looking for a good haunted house book, this probably isn't the one for you. If, however, you enjoy a good old-fashioned gothic romance, keep reading. Torrie Reynolds is a struggling interior decorator who is hired to completely refurbish the local haunter house, Hargrove House. The fact that she accepted a dare to enter this house when she was young at first deters her, but the charming new owner, Will Dalton, quickly wins her over. With the spare no expenses attitude of her new boss, Torrie takes the job. For some reason, everything falls into place very easily and renovations progress quickly. The only problem is that Torrie keeps hearing digging noises coming from the cellar and none of the workers seem to hear it. The storyline isn't really anything new, but it did keep me reading. The ending did have some unexpected twists. But, there were some very abrupt transitions in a couple of places that interrupted the flow of the story. Also, the middle part of the book dragged at times because the reader could see what happening while Torrie seemed oblivious to what was going on around her. All in all, an entertaining read if you love gothic romances, but not for a reader who is expecting a haunted house story complete with ghosts. There really weren't any scary parts in the book at all, which I would expect from a book subtitles "The Haunted".

A Great Read with Stunning, Sensual Detail & a Riveting Storyline! A great read with stunning sensual detail and a riveting storyline, Hargrove House is the first of the Haunted series written by Allie Harrison and she has knocked it out of the park! There were, admittedly, a couple of trivial inconsistencies in the details of character knowledge; but they’re not enough to slow this story down. Hargrove House will keep readers captivated from beginning to end! I can’t wait to read book 2 in the series to see what Harrison has in store for us next!

When she was 11-years-old, Victoria (Torrie) Reynolds accepted a dare to enter the empty and supposedly haunted Hargrove House located in her hometown. Bravely, she went inside, picked up a crystal she saw lying on the floor and put it in her pocket. When she heard a voice say “Victoria,” she fled from the house and ran all the way home. Now, 15 years later, finds her as a struggling decorator in the same town. The new owner of Hargrove House approaches her and asks her to refurbish and decorate the house. The owner, Will, gives her the authority to decorate the house the way she would like to see it. While Torrie is surprised at this, she is also pleased and as she has such wonderful ideas for making the house perfect. The story of the house is that the family that lived there many years ago vanished on the wife’s birthday and were never found. It is also rumored that someone the family knew killed them and buried them in the basement. No reason for that was ever found. As Will wants the work on the house completed in time for him to host a holiday party in December, Torrie immediately starts ordering things and arranging for workers. She is amazed at how readily available workers and furnishings are so that things start coming together quickly. When Will insists that Torrie set up her office in one of the rooms in the house rather than run back and forth to her office, that makes sense and works for her. However, this constant togetherness sparks an attraction between them. When Will’s children start to show up in the house, Torrie is surprised that he never mentioned them before. They are sweet children and soon themselves to Torrie. There are times that certain things in the house don’t make sense but Will always seems to have an explanation for them. But one thing that never gets explained is that strange swishing sound coming from the dark basement that sounds like someone digging. Come read this really good spooky story. I’m betting you won’t want to put it down until you solve the mystery. Copy provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

This piece was a pleasant mix of a haunted house tale and a romance that spans ages. It was mostly well-written, flowing smoothly from start to finish, and I can see how it would appeal to anyone who just wanted to read a cozy story with no major surprises and a family’s reunion. It was a refreshing break from my normal reading. However, Hargrove House flowed a little too smoothly, and what was going on from very close to the beginning was so obvious that it actually detracted from me enjoying the story a bit. There was no real mystery. No thinking involved. No real tension. Torrie’s acceptance of the situation, whilst an argument can be made for it, made her utterly uninteresting. Just when you thought she’d discover something / get riled up properly about something, etc, everything would suddenly calm down and flow like honey again. A nice fluff piece that I don’t regret reading, but will never re-read, I know it will have mass market appeal to people who like their literature a little, uhm, lighter than I do. For what it is, it is excellent, and I don’t get the sense that it tries to be anything more than a ‘cozy’ story. Allie Harrison is definitely a smooth story-teller, and my unenthusiastic reception of this story is likely through no fault of hers.

Hargrove House by Allie Harrison is a must read for the lover of haunted house books. Against her better judgement Torrie Reynolds accepts a job from the mysterious Will Dalton, in which she had free reign to remodel and decorate Hargrove House, her towns legendary haunted house. As the house begins to feel more and more like a true home once more, the mystery surrounding it grows deeper. I received this copy of Hargrove House by Allie Harrison from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
