About the Author

Maulik S. Joshi, DrPH, is the chief operating officer and executive vice president of integrated care delivery at the Anne Arundel Health System (AAHS) in Annapolis, Maryland. At AAHS, Dr. Joshi oversees health system operations and, with a team of more than 4,000 employees, leads the integration of care delivery across the continuum, including acute, ambulatory, post-acute, and ancillary care through owned, affiliated, and joint venture arrangements.

Description: This book on healthcare quality incorporates updates resulting from changes in The Joint Commission standards and the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a framework for quality of care, detail quality issues at the organizational and microsystem level, and examine the environmental influences and trends of individuals, teams, and organizations delivering healthcare. People studying or working in healthcare are certainly looking for more information on these issues, and the book meets its objectives.
Audience: The authors intend this book for undergraduate and graduate students in healthcare related fields, but it also is appropriate for those currently working and practicing. It is easy to see how the information, case studies, and study questions will be useful to students. However, those already working in healthcare can benefit from the updated information and case studies/best practices that can be implemented in their own organizations.
Features: The book begins by defining quality and providing a framework that care should follow, as outlined by major organizations. The bulk of the book covers quality issues at the organizational and microsystem level. The last set of chapters details environmental influences and the trends in delivering healthcare by individuals, teams, and organizations. The thought-provoking study questions that end the chapters will engage students further in their studies.
