From Marissa Meyer, the #1 New York Times–bestselling story of Wonderland's most notorious villain: the Queen of Hearts.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Praise for Heartless:

“In Heartless, the nonsense that is Wonderland gets a reverential makeover, full of heart and its own idiosyncratic character.” —Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and After Alice

“What Gregory Maguire did for the Wicked Witch, Meyer does for Lewis Carroll’s Queen of Hearts, tracing her arc from a teen with dreams of owning a bakery into a murderous madwoman.” —People magazine

“Will make readers grin like the Cheshire Cat.” —Common Sense Media

"Jest and Catherine have a playfully clandestine relationship. . . . Meyer’s worldbuilding is extensive and impressive." —Publishers Weekly

“The author’s best fantasy yet. . . . Meyer has woven all the elements of darkness and light, fate and free will, and love and hatred into an unforgettable story of the evolution of the Red Queen from a young girl who dreamed of true love and freedom to a madwoman best remembered for the phrase 'Off with his head.' If you only read one fractured fairy tale this year, make it Heartless. A must-have title.” —School Library Journal, starred review

Praise for Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series:

#1 New York Times Bestselling Series, USA Today Bestseller, Publishers Weekly Bestseller, National Indie Bestseller

“Marissa Meyer rocks the fractured fairy tale genre.” —The Seattle Times

Heartless is the first stand-alone fantasy novel by American author, Marissa Meyer. Lady Catherine Pinkerton, daughter of the Marquess of Rock Turtle Cove, has one fervent desire: to open her own bakery in the Main Street of the Kingdom of Hearts. But her ambitious mother has other ideas. Determined that her daughter will draw the King’s attention, the Marchioness ensures that Cath is the only one dressed in red at the King’s Black and White Ball. And this is where Cath meets the man of her dreams (literally), but it’s not the King. Every good story needs a character to despise, but did you ever wonder how the Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland got to be so imperious, so cranky, so very despicable? Marissa Meyer has given us her story. And what a tale it is! This prequel has all the essential Alice elements: the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the March Hare, the King of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the dreaded Jabberwock, as well as borrowing from other fiction and introducing brand new characters. Meyer gives the reader an ingenious plot with a few twists and an exciting climax. There is plenty of humour which takes the form of witty dialogue, a good dose of irony, a generous helping of puns and lots of other word play, including clever rhymes. There’s magic and an abundance of echoes of the original Alice. And there are moments that will cause a lump in the throat and maybe even a tear or two. This is a brilliant read and readers will wonder to what Meyer will turn her considerable talents next. Recommended.

I have read the entire Lunar chronicles and LOVED them! It was a wonderful combination of a magic(oops I meant bioelectricity:3), a futuristic world with cyborgs and escort droids, and the timeless tales of Cinderella(Cinder), little red riding hood(Scarlet), Rapunzel(Cresscent/Cress), and Snow White(Winter). It was amazing and addicting and i'm positive Heartless wil be the same!

I read this book in one go. While I wasn’t enthralled in the first chapter, I quickly fell in love. You’d think that going into the book knowing how it ends, it is about the beginning of the queen of hearts after all, I’d be more prepared. Instead, it’s been an hour and I’ve barely stopped crying. This book made me FEEL in ways only the best books can. It is also wonderfully, wonderfully clever, unveiling more and more layers as you think back on it after.

Heartless is WAAAAAY different than Marissa's Lunar Chronicles. Different style, different feel...But just as spectacular! Set in the land of Hearts, before Alice ever came through the looking glass...We meet all our favorite (and maybe not so favorite) Wonderland characters in a way that we have never seen them before. I absolutely LOVE getting glimpses into the lives of well known characters...BEFORE the story starts. Personally, this is my FAVORITE story about the Queen of Hearts that I have encountered. Romance, suspense, heartbreak...this is a thrilling tale that you won't want to put down. And even though we know who she becomes in the end...You can't help hoping that the story will end differently...Because your heart breaks for Cath and Jest. Marissa has painted a character that I want to love...That I want to cheer for... If you love fairytales with happy endings that are all cupcakes and rainbows...This is probably not going to suit your style. But if you are like me, meaning you are a glutton for punishment and read books back to back that rip your heart apart and cause the river of emotions to flow in a torrential downpour. Then THIS is definitely the book for you! I received a complimentary print copy of Heartless. I borrowed the audio version from my local library. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

I love the plot twists and the way this book gives such a good introduction on how the Queen of Hearts came to be. This book is perfect for a book report for fifth grade and up, though I know some people were surprised when I, an eleven year old at the time, read this at school. I would read this late at night because I could not put it down, and I think a lover of fantasy and Sci-fy would enjoy all the incredible books Marissa Meyer writes. However, some people say they are disappointed.

The story comes together beautifully. A remarkable tale of how good intentions don't always have a good end. A creative and enjoyable read.

So very clever, and beautifully written. The story makes sense, tragic tale of how she loses her heart, hopeful while reading but inevitable ending.

The world that Marissa intertwines with the original Alice stories fits so well and is so magical!

Normally I don't like unhappy endings. The in satisfaction and fury that Cath feels grips you from the pages. The unfairness the unjustly nature of all the characters infuriates you. I'm glad I read this story just because everything can't have a happy ending.

I love how the character of the queen of hearts is developed. You feel for her and understand her pain brought her to be so cruel.

This one was a victim of hype for me. The writing was phenomenal but it lacked the emotional punch I was told it would have.

This book is amazing. I highly recomend this. It is a beautifuly woven story about a girl chasing her true love. It tears at the heart strings. I couldn't put this book down! The ending brought tears to my eyes. It is not a girly book. Everyone should read this book!!!!

“Sometimes your heart is the only thing worth listening too.” Heartless by Marissa Meyer is the story of how the Queen of Hearts came to be Heartless. I for one can not get enough Alice in Wonderland retellings or stories set in this world, and this book is another fantastic addition to my list of favorites. It was fun and whimsical, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Marissa Meyer really does write some of the best characters and I would love to have more books written about her version of Wonderland. I give Heartless 4.5 stars.
