Description: This book provides a broad overview of complications in obstetrics.
Purpose: The intention is to expose readers to common complications in obstetrics, but the title is misleading as there are no cases to review.
Audience: Medical students are an appropriate audience, since residents and trained physicians will new more comprehensive books.
Features: The chapters are organized by topic, but don't present any cases. Given that the target audience appears to be students, and that the title of the book includes the word "cases," a case-based approached would probably have been more beneficial. The book is intended for an international audience, since practice differs in the U.S. For example, a double marker test (p. 8) is not done in the U.S. The book is well written and there are sufficient references. The color plates appear at the front of the book, which I don't care for. The black-and-white images appear in the individual chapters and are better placed there.
Assessment: If the goal is to inform students about different aspects of complicated pregnancies, then the book succeeds. This is a well-written book for young trainees, but more sophisticated readers will search out more comprehensive books.
