In this book the care of adult patients with fractures of the proximal femur or hip is covered. The editors' purpose is to present a comprehensive approach to the management of hip fractures by drawing from their own and their institution's rich experiences. These worthwhile objectives are clearly met. Although not stated, it is obvious that this book is written for orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents. Physiatrists and physical therapists also can make good use of it. Both editors are from the New York University School of Medicine and NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City and are fully qualified to undertake this work. The book is divided into 12 chapters: Anatomy; Epidemiology and Mechanism of Injury; Diagnosis; Treatment Principles; Femoral Neck Fractures; Intertrochanteric Fractures; Subtrochanteric Fractures; Pitfalls and Their Avoidance; Rehabilitation; Outcome Assessment; Economics of Hip Fracture Treatment; and Prevention. Detailed surgical techniques with abundant illustrations are presented in an easy-to-read fashion. The editors make good use of the voluminous literature on the subject to present a balanced discussion of several issues. This is the first time I have read about the external hip protector to prevent hip fractures during a fall and the use of the buttress plate on the sliding screw to fix the posteromedial bone fragment of the intertrochanteric fracture. The importance of using anatomical alignment over anatomic fracture reduction in intertrochanteric fractures remains a difficult concept to grasp. The management of hip fractures in the presence of comminution and osteopenia can be a humbling experience in the best of hands. In this book, theauthors do an outstanding job of presenting a commonsense approach that maximizes good functional outcomes and, at the same time, minimizes pitfalls. The authors are to be commended for writing a truly excellent and thorough book. I highly recommend it to all orthopedists and orthopedic residents.
