About the Author

Dan Krager is formerly Manager of Information Systems, HIPAA Officer and HIPAA Security Officer for Richland Memorial Hospital. Dan earned a bachelor of science degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is a certified network engineer with Novell Systems, Cisco systems and Linux, with over 15 years of experience in computer and network applications for hospital settings. As HIPAA officer and HIPAA security officer, Dan enabled Richland Memorial Hospital to move toward compliance. He worked closely with Illinois Hospital Association to build a statewide infrastructure that enables health care organizations to interconnect electronically. As that infrastructure has matured, it has changed the way health care information is exchanged. Working with his wife Carole, Dan authored two successful books about HIPAA before retiring to spend more time in his woodshop, among other places.

Carole H. Krager is an adjunct instructor in the Medical Office Careers Department at Olney Central College campus of Illinois Eastern Community College, teaching medical insurance and coding and advanced coding. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois; is experienced in clinic billing; trained in diagnosis coding at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois and online AHIMA coding courses; has experience in outpatient hospital coding as a full-time coder for Hospital Sisters Health Systems in O’Fallon, Illinois; is a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Carole has been an educator for more than 36 years and has successfully communicated in an easy-to-understand manner. She has been trained in teaching students who learn outside the norm. Experience with billing and coding enabled her to understand the inner workings of both physician and hospital offices.

Sandy C. Moore is an instructor in the Nursing Department at Pensacola State College, where she teaches a wide range of subjects, including EKG, phlebotomy, medical assisting,nursing, ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and healthcare reimbursement, as well as online courses in medical terminology and pharmacology. She holds a bachelor of science degree in both Healthcare Management and Business, and in Nursing. Sandy, a former Department Head of Allied Health, brings a wealth of healthcare experience, complemented by strong management and supervisory skills. She has worked extensively in both inpatient and outpatient settings and previously served as the HIPAA Privacy Officer at Fairfield Dental Center in Pensacola, Florida, contributing to their HIPAA compliance. She is recognized for her ability to bridge real-world clinical experience with academic instruction. She is highly skilled in working with diverse populations and excels at adapting her teaching strategies to support students with varying learning styles, ensuring a successful and inclusive learning environment for all.
