Overview

Household Gods, written by Crowley in Italy in 1911, is one of his most erotic books. He called it a comedy. Crowley became a cult hero during the sex and drugs culture of the late 1960s and early 70s. Most notably, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page purchased his former estate and lived there for twenty-one years (it is featured in the film The Song Remains the Same). Crowley's likeness is on the cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album, he is the subject of a song by Ozzy Osbourne, and is referenced in David Bowie's song "Quicksand."

About the Author

Aside from writing prolifically, Englishman Aleister Crowley painted, climbed mountains, performed magic, and practiced in the occult. Too, he founded his own religion and proclaimed himself a prophet. He obtained notereity during his lifetime not only for openly practicing the occult but also for openly experimenting with drugs, writing eroticism, developing a curriculum for magic based on anal sex, practicing sadomasochism, and living as an openly bisexual man. Crowley's first sexual experience with a male coincided with his first purported mystical experience, and some biographers believe the former led to the latter. Crowley's first important sexual relationship with a male occurred while he was a student at Cambridge. Herbert Charles Pollitt eventually left Crowley because Crowley's delving into alchemy freaked him out; Crowley regretted the breakup for years thereafter. Crowley met the English poet Victor Neuberg in 1907, and the two men entered into a sadomasochistic relationship. Crowley also had sex with male clients of Turkish baths and with young male prostitutes in Palermo. Too, he engaged in sex with many of his male disciples, usually taking the passive role in anal sex, for same-sex activity was a part of practicing sex magic.
