This book presents a step-by-step process for learning a new language. Farber gives you a list of materials you should have (grammar book, phrase book, tapes, etc.). You start by learning five chapters of grammar, then you read some real life materials (magazine, newspaper, etc.) and underline and memorize all words you don't know. You then add phrase learning and tapes. He offers a method to learn long lists of vocabulary words. His learning method is excellent and I have used it a lot. However, I have some criticisms. He does not present any methods for learning scripts. I felt that jumping into newspapers in my target language was not too helpful to begin with because I felt I was learning less common words. I think learning everyday words such as low, cold, happy, red is more useful than learning words like parliament or meeting. In my target language (Bengali) sentence structure is very confusing. I was disappointed that the book did not include any tips on how to learn and understand sentence structure. Having said that I recommend this book because you can get a lot of ideas from Farber and then use what works for you or come up with ideas of your own.

After reading Barry Farber's book, my language anxieties melted away, leaving me with an 'I-could-do-it' attitude. Practicing Farber's simple pedagogics is allowing me to learn Spanish as I never knew I could. I'm even becoming a good student of Koine Greek. Just try this book to see what I mean.
