This book has two main purposes. The first is to describe the process and strategy by which the Interstate-5 North Coast Corridor Project, a controversial freeway widening project in Southern California, overcame multiple obstacles, gained consensus and came to be championed by the communities, elected officials and the environmental resource agencies. The second and greater purpose is to illustrate the urban design, architectural, and landscape features that were born from the approval process and documented in the Corridor Design Guidelines.

About the Author

Arturo has over 30 years of experience in the design, project development, and project management of large regional multimodal transportation projects in southern California, including freeway interchanges, Corridor Express Lanes, Lagoon Restorations, and rail projects. Arturo holds a BS degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and is a Registered Civil Engineer with the State of California.
As Project Manager for the I-5 North Coast Corridor Project, Arturo led multi-disciplinary teams and coordinated with external stakeholders, including the California Coastal Commission, the public, and elected officials to deliver balanced multi-modal transportation projects that benefit all users and the environment. Arturo was an ardent sponsor and advocate for making the I-5 NCC an enhanced corridor through the implementation of the Design Guidelines.
