Description: This is a multiauthored treatise on hypertension in older persons. It is part of a series on clinical hypertension and vascular disease.
Purpose: The purpose is to review hypertension in older persons. It meets these objectives well through careful writing and editing.
Audience: The audience is all physicians treating hypertension in older persons and researchers in the area as well. The authors are all well-versed in their respective fields.
Features: The beauty of this book is in its pagination. After describing changes of aging in several chapters there are reviews of clinical epidemiology and treatment trials. Then come sections on evaluation and management followed by chapters on pharmacological management. Then there is a discussion of special populations — African-American, diabetics, and arthritic patients. The book ends with a discussion of adherence.
Assessment: This is a splendid treatise on hypertension in the elderly. The flow of the chapters is superb. The authors are all conservative in their viewpoint and never dogmatic or parochial. The writing is concise and lucid and the references are well chosen and well cited. The illustrations underscore the points very well. This is a most thoughtful and useful effort.
