About the Author

Craig Detweiler (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is an author, award-winning filmmaker, and cultural commentator who has been featured in the New York Times, on CNN, and on NPR. He is professor of communication and director of the Center for Entertainment, Media, and Culture at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Detweiler is the author of Into the Dark: Seeing the Sacred in the Top Films of the 21st Century, coauthor of A Matrix of Meanings, and editor of Halos and Avatars.

In his book iGods, Dr. Detweiler follows the footprints of the internet pioneers that built the platforms for today's online world. This detailed analysis follows Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook. The thrust of the book is to reveal how much of our online world has been shaped for us. Detweiler frequently refers to these "walled gardens" - news articles often refer to these as ecosystems - e.g. Apple/Amazon/Google/Microsoft all provide devices such as tablets, apps, online services including games, movies, music, cloud storage... and they want your credit card for easy purchasing and they want your time for advertising revenues. The book discusses Google's rank algorithms that decide what sites best answer your queries, how Apple provides you with online devices, and how Amazon let's you know what you need to buy, and how Facebook keeps you current with the posts of your online community. The book is written with the intent of encouraging a Christian reader to question the lifestyle that most people have fallen into, including the expectations of being always available, sharing all important news online, and multitasking rather than giving those around us our full attention. The book is a good read for anyone, regardless of faith, to understand how the online world has engulfed us and to question how our perceptions are managed by an online world controlled by iGods...
