Congratulations! You have been randomly selected by the government...to DIE in 24 hours! Please enjoy your final day and take pride in the fact that your death will inspire others to live life to the fullest! Welcome to the world of Ikigami, the Death Notice, where to keep citizens on the straight and narrow path of productivity and prosperity, each day a different citizen is selected for termination! View the last 24 hours through the very eyes of the people slated to die for their country with no hope of reprieve! What people do when they have no hope of survival will shock you to your core in this frightening, dark series of stories!

Dear Citizen: You’ve no doubt noticed that the world is a troubled place. People are apathetic, lazy, unmotivated. You’ve probably asked yourself: Why isn’t anything being done to stop this systematic decline? Well, you’ll be happy to know measures are being taken. We, your government, have decided society needs a wake-up call. So beginning today, we will randomly select a different citizen who will be killed within 24 hours of notification. We believe this will help remind all people how precious life is, and how important it is to be productive, active members of society. Thank you for your attention and your cooperation and participation in this new program.

This manga presents a different story. Children are injected with vaccines when they enter school but every so often one of them gets a capsule that will kill the person at a certain age. The idea here is to make population cherish life and live it to the fullest and be as happy as they can because they never know when their number is going to come up. And when your number is "drawn" you are given 24hrs to live. If you commit crimes in this last 24hrs your remaining family will be punished and fined for your wrong doings. This is a very messed up concept and world. Could it ever happen in life??? This looked really good on the shelf when I bought it, and I read it really quickly. However, I just didn't care for this manga. I won't read the next one as this just didn't thrill me.

What's right and what's wrong? Is being picked to die for your country an honor or just a scheme to cover up the big problems in society by killing off the innocent? It's a very well-thought out manga with well-drawn art and a powerful message.

Set in the near future, the japanese government has enacted a law to combat violence, suicide, and lack of motivation. Following the law, at a young age students throughout the nation are subjected to a vaccine, 1 in 1000 of which has nanobots that kill you. With the new law crime rates are down, as well as suicides, and people throughout the country are more motivated to live. This book covers the life of a government offical charged with delivering death notices, and the lives of his recievers.
