About the Author

Milan-based design duo Carnovsky was started by Silvia Quintanilla and Francesco Rugi in 2007. They have gained wide recognition for their RGB project, first displayed in 2010. Their work has been published in magazines around the world, such as Vogue, Wired, Frame, Wallpaper, Elle Decor, and Whitewall. Their wallpaper 'Jungla' won the 2012 Wallpaper Magazine Design Award for Best Wallpaper.

Kate Davies was born and brought up in north-west London, UK. She studied English at Oxford University before becoming a writer and editor of children’s books. She also writes comedy scripts and is the author of the best-selling novel for adults, In At the Deep End, which published in 2019. Kate lives in east London with her wife.

Gr 4–8—The key to this title is the multicolored "X-ray lens" included in a special pocket on the inside cover. Looking at the illustrations through the colored lens allows readers to look inside the human body; the red lens illuminates the skeleton, the green highlights the muscles, and the blue focuses on the organs and blood vessels. Viewing through the glasses is really quite magical, although the blue lens is a bit dark and requires good lighting for the best effect. There are 10 chapters covering various body parts (such as the head and the heart) and one chapter on how a baby grows. Each section is comprised of three spreads. The first, called "Part of the Body," introduces the topic with a colored illustration (meant to be viewed with the X-ray lens), text, and a description of what readers can see with the lens. The second spread, called "X-ray Room," is a colored illustration without text that is meant to be viewed with the lens. "Anatomy Room" is the third section and comprised of black-and-white illustrations with clearly labelled descriptions of body parts and their function—no X-ray lens required here. The oversize format and the necessity of keeping track of a detachable lens (essential for full enjoyment of the title) might mean that it isn't a viable choice for all libraries. VERDICT A nifty book sure to appeal to casual browsers and science devotees alike. Large collections may want to consider.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn

An unusual inside look at human anatomy, featuring specially processed images that are color matched to a three-windowed viewer.On 10 spreads, the illustrators (Carnovsky is the nom de plume of Milan-based illustrators Silvia Quintanilla and Francesco Rugi) employ slightly displaced color separations to create human figures or body segments that look blurred to unaided eyes but depict organs, muscles, and bones with clinical realism when viewed, respectively, through the small cyan, green, and red acetate filters provided on a strip in a front pocket. The scale ranges from a near-term fetus that is close to life size to extreme close-ups of an eye and an ear. Each of the full-spread "X-Ray Rooms" is sandwiched between an introductory collaged close-up preview (likewise processed) and an "Anatomy Room" that features brief narrative descriptions over smaller, labeled black-and-white versions of the main images. Students willing to flip back and forth will come away with decent understandings of the locations and functions of select organs and parts, but even if the images aren't always all that distinct through the viewer, like the similarly designed Illuminature (also illustrated by Carnovsky but written by Rachel Williams, 2016), the visual gimmick will be the strongest draw.A novelty item, but even casual browsers will be riveted.
