This book addresses the host of newly evolving methods, most of which are molecular, that are being explored as improved assays for diagnosis of many infectious diseases. It is a compilation of presentations given at the 13th International Convocation on Immunology at Buffalo, New York in 1996. The purpose is to provide the presentations given at the conference. It is intended for infectious disease specialists and microbiologists. The book is in an unfortunate format, most likely driven by the need for rapid time to press. The chapters are printed in fonts and style chosen by the presenters at the conference, and the variability in quality is extraordinary even for publications of proceedings of this type. There was no editorial mandate on font size, and some fonts are so small that presbyopic readers may need magnifying glasses to interpret the data! Many chapters are too short to be of any value to most readers, but a few are quite complete and helpful. The ones on immunodiagnosis of schistosomiasis and a brief but interesting discussion of hantaviruses deserve a meritorious mention. There's some unfortunate titling and placement of some presentations. For example, ""flesh-eating bacteria"" is the subtitle in the streptococcus presentation. This term, in a scientific forum, provides more fodder for the media to sensationalize this rare syndrome. There is also the placement of chronic fatigue syndrome in a section entitled ""Syndromes of Various Infectious Origins."" Since there is absolutely no data to suggest that chronic fatigue syndrome is infectious, this only serves to perpetuate the myth in the venue of a scientific presentation. This book is recommended only as alist source for emerging topics of interest in the molecular diagnosis of infectious disease. Readers interested in actual methodology and data analysis will have to go elsewhere in their quest.
