In Search of the Meaning of Life (An Autobiography): Book Eight - A Book of Philosophy
Sometimes, the best way to find ourselves is to get lost in the process. So lost, in fact, that we're afraid we'll never find our way back again, especially the direction we've only just come from. It's when we find ourselves alone and directionless in the quiet moments of our lives, in surroundings we know we don't belong in and aspire to leave behind, that we can hear ourselves think without the distraction of the status quo calling us back to what had been our everyday reality.

My questioning began very early on in this odyssey on the road, and as this internal dialogue developed I wrote down all of these debates with myself on a yellow, legal pad. This process of spontaneously writing my 152 philosophical questions and ponderings, laid the foundation for a resolution to the dilemma as to which way I should go with my life, seemingly giving me permission to follow my heart and my dreams...

About the Author

In Search of the Meaning of Life was the very first book I wrote - seemingly by accident - in March 1979, during a time when I was searching for the meaning and purpose of my life. I'd come to a crossroads of sorts on the path I'd been traveling ever since arriving in Seattle following The Great Adventure and wanted answers to which way to go next. At the time I was on an adventure of sorts, crisscrossing the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana, but wasn't having any fun in the process and needed to know what direction I was to travel to reach my future.

My mind told me at the time that my life was going fine down a well-traveled road, yet my heart knew my dreams were diverging off on a seldom-traveled path, so something had to change. The question was, was I strong enough to do something about it? Was I willing to give up all that I was for the hope of becoming all I could be? Could I walk away from all I'd built in Seattle over the past two years or so for the promise of a dream? Would I remain true to my spirit of adventure and the adventurous life I pledged myself to back at Michigan State University? Would I remain true to who I knew myself to be?

This small book of philosophy was a life ring that I clutched with all my might, adrift in the open ocean of life while buffeted by gale force winds and high waves as I attempted to find a safe harbor to anchor my soul. It was after writing this book that I was able to remove my self-imposed blinders to pursue the path that was always laid out before me - but one I had been blind to see and fully recognize. It was time to chart a new course in life and bicycle through England, Scotland, Wales and France...
