Though he's still credited on the cover, Baxter passed away in 2005. This work is an update and revision by Marian Hoffman (Genealogical & Local History Books in Print) of the 2008 edition by the author's daughter, Susan Baxter. The introduction notes that genealogical research practices and sources have changed enormously since the 1987 first edition—at that time, for example, the Latter-day Saints church had only begun its effort to copy records in Germany, and the Internet was not an option. Today there is a wealth of sources; what they are and why and how to use them is covered in detail by Baxter in chapters such as "Jewish Records," "Church Records," and "Archives in Germany." The author also offers background on German immigration to the United States and political and demographic changes in what is now Germany over time. Some of the commentary is also suitable for those searching for data from any part of the world—Baxter emphasizes, for example, the importance of talking to all family members and ensuring that nobody else has done the work before you. A handy companion to the book is the publisher's Historic German Newspapers Online, compiled by Ernest Thode.
