In two Words: An Amazing Little Dictionary of Two-Word Phrases
IN TWO WORDS is a dictionary of two-word phrases from literature, history, science, technology, and popular culture. The Introduction uses a simple equation to show how twists and turns of meaning can develop. (A quote from movie mogul Sam Goldwyn teaches the difference between one word and two!) From "abominable snowman" through "hundredth monkey", from "pessimistic pimple" through "zero point", this book focuses not only on intriguing and surprising meanings but on their origins, development, use, and contribution to the richness of the English language
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
W. Terrence Gordon is the internationally acclaimed biographer of Canadian media analyst Marshall McLuhan (1997's Escape into Understanding). His popular books in the For Beginners series on McLuhan and Sanssure will soon be joined by Linguistics for Beginners; and he is currently at work on a biography of the mysterious language scholar Charles Kay Ogden. With IN TWO WORDS, Gordon returns to one of his first loves - telling the stories of words and their usage. He lives on the shores of Nova Scotia's beautiful Bedford Basin, and teaches French, Italian, and linguistics at Dalhousie University.
