About the Author

Luke S. P. Moore is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Virology at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London. He has authored numerous publication in this area, and previously published revision books for the MRCP exams (2013).

James C. Hatcher is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Virology at Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Trust. He has particular expertise in paediatric infections. He has successfully passed FRCPath and RCP specialist exams in infectious diseases, and have additional qualifications in microbiology, public health, and tropical medicine.

Purpose: The purpose is to prepare infectious disease trainees for the infectious disease subspecialty examination in Britain, the FRCPath part 1 infection examination as well as the membership exams of the Royal College of Physicians. The authors are practicing infectious disease physicians in the U.K. and are also involved in teaching infectious disease subspecialty trainees. The aim is to target high-yield topics on the examination.
Audience: Trainees in the infectious disease subspecialty are the primary audience for this book. Medical students and internal medicine residents interested in Infectious disease specialization are also an audience.
Features: Chapters 1 through 4 cover the biology of pathogens and the role of the microbiology laboratory. Chapters 5 through 10 address important clinical syndromes in infectious diseases, infection control, antimicrobial agents, vaccination, travel medicine, and infections in immunocompromised hosts. The book provides the correct answers accompanied by brief discussions (typically a paragraph or two) and accompanying references. It also features pictures of some high yield topics for the infectious disease subspecialty exam. The style of questions differs from typical U.S. board questions. Unlike many of the questions in this book, U.S. board questions typically have longer stems, require understanding of more than one concept, and have answers that can be recognized by the astute examinee after reading the stem and before reading the list of choices. The chapter on important clinical syndromes has the most content relevant to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Infectious Disease subspecialty board examination.
