CHAPTER 1

There is a place, not in space, but somewhere near.

Beneath its beautiful sky, everything seems so clear.

It's a place where some cry but with happy tears.

But nothing—but nothing—is ever what it appears.

It's a fountain of youth. The old can grow young.

There's no such thing as friction. The only rule there is fun.

You can emerge from the shadows and become number one or even number two.

It's entirely up to you.

"But how could I get there?" I asked Missus Tree as I sat on her branch and dangled my feet.

She gave me instructions to follow the leaves that blew in the wind but just a few feet.

I lent them my ear. They whispered to me, "That's as far as we'll take you. As far as can reach."

The winds were exhausted and so were my feet. The birds don't have seat belts—besides, they were sleep.

But I still have to get there across Nevaeh creek.

I could go it alone, but I can't make it there myself.

I'll just have to ask for a little more help.

Then came the Fog. I just couldn't see.

And all I could hear was the beat of my heart. I lost track of time and was coming apart.

Will I be stalked? Will I be chased? My mind danced circles around the thought of this place.

I made my way toward Dairyland Lane. I drank a warm glass of milk.

Then it started to rain.

So I sat there still until there wasn't a cloud in the sky.

Then the heat hit my back, and the sun set in my eyes.

Mrs. Storm came and went. We said our good-byes.

We weren't very close, so I didn't cry.

I scavenged the land for something to eat. With no one to lend me a hand, it was all up to me to fill up my belly and pack up some snacks.

I tripped over a log. I crashed to the ground. A piglet named Ham, a solid-black frog, a chicklet named

Spoon, and a silly little dog started mouthing off.

I offered them some food, and we ate like hogs.

After we ate, we searched for shade but found a spot to rest. Then we lay back and glanced at the frosted-lavender clouds, candy-colored atmosphere, and bubble-gum-pink sky.

The bubble-gum-pink sky was absolutely amazing. It was as pleasant as the smell of freshly cut wood, as pleasant as the smell of homemade cookies on one's breath. It was such a genuine, authentic visual fulfillment. It held no blemishes. I loved its flawless complexion, its prickly glare, and its weightless shine. After we were good and rested, we jogged around Rocky Road Mountain, Blue Berry Grove, and Straw Berry Lane with fake long curls bouncing in the air. Then we played among the dogwood blooms, sugar-soft sand, and warm blue waters. One thing about this place was, I saw everything the weather had to offer. It rained so much out here I might have had to grow a pair of fins.
