Description: This second edition updates the 2012 edition by exploring the need for nurses to consider a global perspective in order to implement the best nursing evidence. The text draws upon the strengths of the first edition in providing students and instructors with user-friendly content and resources.
Purpose: The authors have provided a well-outlined book aimed at presenting a comprehensive survey of evidence-based practice, tools, and methods to enable faculty to use with undergraduate and graduate students and as a resource for practicing nurses to be used in staff development. The text builds upon foundational content of understanding, analysis, and synthesis of evidence with a "real-world" illustration on how evidence is put into action in clinical and patient settings. The text can be used across the curriculum to learn about evidence-base practice or as a supporting resource for the basic principles of evidence-based practice within the healthcare setting.
Audience: The authors clearly outline the book is intended for a broad audience of undergraduate nursing students first being introduced to evidence-based practice (EBP) and for graduate nursing students learning to enact EBP as a scaffold to their education. Significantly, practicing nurses will also benefit from this resource to guide them through evidence-based practice and quality improvement in practice. The text provides clear direction and thoughtful flow including examples that are clinically appropriate with exemplars. The authors and contributors represent educators and scholars in both academic and practice settings.
Features: Among the many features in this book to assist readers is the use of "Hayes' 5" as a structure for aligning the nursing process with evidence-based practice. The text further builds upon a stepwise consideration of the basics of EBP through use of pragmatic frameworks and models of EBP to translation into everyday use. Each chapter provides a "parallel" illustration of how EBP can address nurse-sensitive outcomes, taking the process from problem recognition to outcome evaluation and quality improvement. An area of attention is that the references provided in the updated edition are dated and may not reflect current literature. Learners will have access to the online resources, which enhance learning, such as podcasts (lectures and conversations), interviews, and references and resources (planned, not yet developed). Instructors will have access to a test bank, PowerPoint lecture slides and teaching tips. An ebook is available. An access code to online resources is provided with the textbook.
Assessment: This book provides useful tools for introduction to evidence-based practice as a guide and resource for undergraduate and graduate nursing students as well as practicing nurses. The text offers a framework and process for learning with consideration of the global perspective. Well stated by the authors is that this text "has utility in the beginning, middle, and end" of a nursing student's learning or within a staff development program. The additions provided by the second edition enhance the previous work of the book and are pertinent.
