About the Author

Dr. Hunter Manasco is an Associate Professor in the Speech-Language Pathology Department at Misericordia University. Dr. Manasco’s areas of specialization include neuroanatomy, aphasia, motor speech disorders, dysphagia, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and autism. He received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Communication Disorders at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. Dr. Manasco completed his doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of South Alabama. He His primary research interests center on stroke and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Dr. Manasco has worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist in acute care, long-term care, hospice, adult rehabilitation, and school and hospital based pediatrics. He has presented numerous papers in his areas of specialty at state and national conferences.

Purpose: The author states that a combination of anecdotal/clinical and academic knowledge is a practical format for presenting complex subjects, which this book uses. The book details both the emotional/social side of communication disorders and the anatomic and physiological descriptions typical for such books.
Audience: The audience is entry-level students in the field of speech-language pathology. The author's studies and postdoctoral work focus on neurogenic communication disorders.
Features: The book presents a view of communication disorders that includes the more commonly studied topics of aphasia and dysarthria as well as the lesser-studied, but often prevalent, topics of seizure and infection. Unique to this book are the many real-life examples provided in video and text that present a complete and clear view of the disorders. This multimedia format provides an excellent mode of learning for entry-level students.
Assessment: Unlike many books that present purely academic information in a traditional format, this one is a refreshing guide to a complex subject. The author of this book achieves this by presenting not only an academic knowledge base, but also a more complete understanding using anecdotes, videos, and images of patients with communication disorders, as well as the social/emotional aspects that often accompany these disorders.
