This book is life-changing. Ms. Engel is a survivor of childhood abuse and a therapist. She really knows her stuff. She has an amazing ability to speak to survivors of different kinds of abuse without making others uncomfortable. She gently helps you confront the shame of being abused by someone who was supposed to love you and care for you. The book really makes sense. I kept thinking, "How did she get inside my head?" Apparently there are a lot of people running around with issues like mine, which should be obvious but never ocurred to me before, which is validating, and a huge relief. Then, after blowing your mind by telling you she knows all about you and you aren't alone, she goes on to tell you how to deal those feelings. And it works! I've read a lot of self help books and never got anywhere near this kind of benefit from them. If you suffered abuse in childhood, whether it was verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual, get this book. You don't have to hate yourself, feel inadequate, or beat yourself up any more. Life can be a lot better.
