About the Author

Edward H. Livingston, MD is Contributing Editor for JAMAevidence, Deputy Editor for JAMA, and the Clinical Reviews and Education Editor for the JAMA Network. Dr Livingston is also Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical School and an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University. He previously served as Professor and Chair of Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Surgery and Professor and Chair of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine.

Roger J. Lewis, MD, PhD is Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and the Senior Medical Scientist at Berry Consultants, LLC. Dr. Lewis is a member of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies and a Fellow of both the Society for Clinical Trials and the American Statistical Association.

Description: This is a guide to help physicians and other clinicians understand the breadth and depth of statistical methods available to conduct and evaluate evidence-based medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate clinicians/researchers about the biostatistical and epidemiological methods used to conduct and evaluate evidence-based medicine. These are worthy objectives, and the book is needed by clinicians who are also researchers and need to be familiar with the currently available methods. This thorough book meets these objectives, covering a vast number of topics.
Audience: The intended audience is clinicians who want to understand research methods. The book meets the needs of busy physicians who need a quick reference guide. The authors are highly credentialed.
Features: The book does a good job of covering many areas in a succinct manner, such as minimal clinically important difference (MCID) vs. statistically meaningful difference and the need for more sophisticated missing data approaches besides last observation carried forward (LOCF). It provides clinicians with enough knowledge to communicate intelligently with a biostatistician or epidemiologist. I was surprised by, and appreciated, the glossary; it is very well organized. An area of the book that could have been better developed is the discussion of intention-to-treat analysis (ITT). Although the topic is covered in some depth, I came away not really understanding why an ITT analysis is necessary other than studies are biased otherwise.
Assessment: This is a high-quality book that synthesizes useful information in a manner that clinicians interested in research methodology can understand.
