Overview

Available for the first time on CD, ten more delightful stories from the pen of the world's most beloved veterinarian-a perfect gift book guaranteed to delight the Yorkshire vet's worldwide legions of fans.

When you enter the world of James Herriot's Animal Stories, you'll share his wonder and humor, his adventures and misadventures as he contends with pet owners and landowners; rough-spoken farmers and soft-spoken gentry; orphaned lambs, litters of piglets and puppies, cattle and draught horses; and a miscellany of cats and dogs including, of course, Mrs. Pumphrey's inimitable Pekinese, Tricki Woo.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Read by the actor Christopher Timothy, who portrayed Herriot on the BBC series, this production includes ten delightful stories drawn from four British tapes of Herriot's works. They begin with the young veterinarian's adventures in his developing practice, progress through his romance with Helen to his experiences as a more mature veterinary surgeon. His stories paint vivid pictures of the people and Yorkshire countryside that he loved, and the brutally cold winters through which he suffered. Using his flexible voice with great skill, Timothy does a superb job of defining the various characters. A rather long introduction written by Herriot's son and read monotonously by the production manager adds a little personal information about the brilliant writer, who died in 1995. Libraries whose patrons continue to enjoy the Herriot books and tapes will not go wrong in purchasing this one.Carolyn Alexander, Brigadoon Lib., Salinas, CA

From the Publisher

James Herriot found a gentle, wise and often humorous way to write about animals and to evoke a beautiful but fading way of life in those Yorkshire Hills...I can't say that I have ever quite matched the writing...but he has always inspired me and given me something to aim for.” —Jon Katz, NYT bestselling author of Second Chance Dog

“I recall reading All Creatures Great and Small many years ago, while working as a veterinary technician...Herriot to me remains a superhero of sorts, who...taught me how simple, heartwarming prose about people and their animals could...become art.” —Steve Duno, author of Last Dog on the Hill

OCT/NOV 04 - AudioFile

These warm and charming remembrances of an English country veterinarian are framed with wit and alacrity by author Herriot and reader Christopher Timothy, who played the vet on the long-running BBC series. The uncluttered audio track allows strong verbal pictures to develop, cozy and nostalgic as Christmas in Yorkshire. This storytelling is observant, revealing, and entertaining--there’s no skimping on local color or even medical procedures, some of which may put off squeamish listeners. The stoic folk--thick accents and all--and quirky animals to whom Herriot ministers will be welcome visitors to your ears and mind in this ten-story collection.
