About the Author

Napatsi Folger was born and grew up in Iqaluit, Nunavut. She lived there until her family moved to Vancouver in 1991. Napatsi returned to Iqaluit in 2004 to work for the Department of Education, Government of Nunavut. In 2010 she moved to Toronto to continue her education at the University of Toronto.

I get up from the table and drag my feet to my room. I hear my sister pleading for Mom to stay. Allashua is the only one still convinced that she can persuade our mom to stay and keep the family whole. I lie on my bed and stare at the ceiling. There are water stains on the ceiling tiles. I think about when my mother used to lie down with me before bedtime and pretend the water stains were clouds. We would try to think of different shapes for the same old “clouds” night after night. It seems so long ago now, since the last time she was in my bed. All I can think is that those happy nights laughing and talking with her are never coming back. I turn away from the ceiling and push my face into the pillow, too sad to even daydream.
