Zoe York lost her twin sister to a freak car accident a few months ago. She's been struggling to bury her grief, but it isn't until she signs up for a self-defense class with its distractingly hot instructor that she begins to come out of her shell again. Soon they're sparring both in and out of the gym. And for the first time in a long time, each is looking forward to tomorrow.

I liked this one, but had a hard time really connecting with the characters at times. With two broken people I expected to get pulled into their connection, and although their issues were addressed, it was done more separate than together so I think this is where the disconnect happened for me. Both Gavin and Zoe have experienced loss and both are trying to move their lives forward. Where Gavin tried to use alcohol and sex as his escape, Zoe threw herself into work and the gym…the gym where Gavin works. When Zoe finally gives in and decides to accept the offer of a date from Gavin it’s quickly apparent that their attraction and feelings are hot and hard. I loved that Gavin didn’t try to cover up how he felt with Zoe – he did make it clear that he didn’t know how much he had to give, but he was interested in more than a one night stand. Even though I felt their dialogue could sometimes be a bit repetitive – how many times do I need to hear Gavin extolling all his manly virtues – there was some real cute wordplay between these two. There are lots of very serious issues addressed in this book and I enjoyed seeing the interactions between Gavin and his therapist. I think the author did an outstanding job of addressing his issues with the care they deserved. The Donnagin family seems filled with an interesting if not a bit off-centered group of characters. Between the family prank wars to the fun sibling interactions, this is definitely a family that would be all sorts of fun to be friends with. I loved how close-knit they were and the roles they play in each other’s lives. There were some fun moments, but overall I just never clicked with this one. It was good, there was nothing really wrong with the book, it read well and has a really great cover, but again, I just never really connected with the characters. That being said, this Donnagin family has definitely gotten me interested in the next story, so I will probably check that out when it comes out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book I received from NetGalley.

ws loss, she lost her twin sister in a car accident and has been struggling with her grief. She's starting to come out of her shell now that she's signed up for the self-defense class and has met the hot instructor. She keeps putting off living thinking that she's the one that should have been driving the car that killed her sister, because she was the fun one, the outgoing one, the prettier one, until she decides that a fling with Gavin may be just the thing that her sister would root for. The two spar at the gym and everyday they look forward to tomorrow so they can see each other. They help each other through the hard times and they are bringing each other out of their shell. Gavin uses jokes to hide his pain and is going to therapy to help him with his PTSD. I loved her interactions with Gavin's family especially in the prank wars, that was funny. Just the Thing was well put together, funny, and a great read. Although, you may want to have a few tissues ready towards the end of the story. I know I could have used a few. Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from the publisher.

3.75 stars-- JUST THE THING is the second installment in Marie Harte’s contemporary, adult THE DONNIGANS erotic, romance series focusing on the Donnigan family. This is Marine Gavin Donnigan, and medical IT programmer Zoe York’s story line. JUST THE THING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. THE DONNIGANS is a spin off from Marie Harte’s THE MCCAULEY BROTHERS and BODY SHOP BAD BOYS series. You do not have to have read the previous series to follow the spin off. The Donnigan and The McCauley siblings are cousins. Told from dual third person perspectives (Gavin and Zoe) JUST THE THING follows the building romance between Marine Gavin Donnigan, and medical IT programmer Zoe York. Working as a trainer at the local gym since returning stateside and medically discharged from active duty Gavin has had his eye on Zoe York for several months. But all attempts at flirtation and fun have been pushed aside by the black-haired beauty and no matter what he does, Zoe continues to play hard to get until one day Gavin is surprised that Zoe is willing to give him a chance. What ensues is the building relationship between Zoe and Gavin, and the fall out when Gavin’s past continues to destroy his peace of mind. Gavin Donnigan was released from active duty following a mission that went horribly wrong. Not only did Gavin survive a gunshot wound weeks before, but several of his fellow Marines didn’t make it home alive, and our hero now has issues with survivors guilt and PTSD. Throughout the story line we are up close and personal with Gavin’s struggle to move on with his life including the ability to fall in love with the woman that calls to his heart. Zoe York lost her twin sister to a car accident months before and she battles the what-ifs and whys at different times during the day. Moving forward has been a struggle, but each day makes it easier to remember the good time with the sister that she lost. Falling in love with Gavin Donnigan found our heroine looking forward to the future, a future that is in jeopardy with Gavin’s inability to accept the loss of his fellow Marines. The relationship between Gavin and Zoe is one of immediate attraction but both agree that a permanent relationship at this time in their lives may not be forthcoming. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic, and intense. Gavin is willing to submit to the woman he jokingly calls his Mistress. JUST THE THING is a story with moments of laughter and fun; heartbreak and sorrow; emotional breakdowns and too many tears. The premise is engaging, entertaining, dramatic and sorrowful; the characters are colorful, dynamic and real; the romance is spicy, seductive and passionate. JUST THE THING is the story of one man’s struggle to move forward with his life, and the woman who accepts the man that he has become.

This was a very fun read. Great banter not only between the MC's, but the side characters as well. Gavin came off as an arrogant hottie, but I don't think he truly was arrogant. He had such a great sense of humor and played to that. His 2 brothers, sister and even his parents made appearances throughout the book and added to the overall enjoyment of this story. They are a close-knit family that played pranks on each other. Immature? Maybe. Funny? Yes. If you have read the McCauley series, we get appearances from them as well. There are some serious sides to this story, as well. Both Gavin and Zoe have suffered personal loss in their lives and we get to see them balance a new love while dealing with their grief. An opposites attraction that complimented each other very well. I am very interested in reading more into this series. The characters were very easy to fall in love with. ARC provided by NetGalley.

This for me is a 3.5 star book. I was looking forward to this book, after enjoying Landon’s story in book one. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. The main characters in this book are Gavin and Zoe. Gavin is ex-military , suffering from PTSD and Zoe, still mourning the death of her twin sister a few months ago. I really wanted to like Gavin, especially since he had served our country, and like many returning troops, is dealing with PTSD. But somehow, he turned me off . He acts annoyingly like a teenager even childish at times. This appears to be the way of coping with his issues, but not a successful one for me. All that said, I appreciate and admire Ms Harte’s talent and dealing with sensitive subject matters. I was gifted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Over the years, I have become a fan of Ms. Harte's contemporary romances. Sure her stories have a tendency to get steamy but behind all the foreplay lie some deeply meaningful messages. In the case of Gavin and Zoe, theirs is a quest for hope. Gavin lost his fighting for a world that he feels like a stranger in. Nightmares and guilt are his constant companions in a world filled with loneliness and despair. For Zoe, her anguish lies in losing a piece of soul. The death of her twin has left her searching for who she is and what comes next in her life. The loneliness is overpowering and the pain cuts deep for both, but the oddest thing happens. Out of the darkness, they find strength in each other. Just The Thing has the power to break your heart, but between the author and her awesome lead characters it also has the will to heal it.

This is a very nice, fast paced romantic comedy that actually deals with the side effects of grief as well as PTSD and survivor’s guilt. I enjoyed both Gavin and Zoe although Gavin’s behavior was a little juvenile at times for a thirty-two year old man. His family’s prank war was hilarious and entertaining but I felt like there were moments that it overtook the story. However, my heart hurt for Gavin when he had to face his past and make a decision on how to deal with it. Zoe’s character remained strong and dedicated. She was willing to do whatever Gavin needed to find healing. This was a fun read with some serious moments, plenty of humor, and some extra spicy bedroom play. No real epilogue and the ending sets us up for Gavin’s sister Hope. ARC provided by Netgalley Dual POV Safe No apparent triggers

Every step Gavin Donnigan takes his demons are two steps behind him, he's seen things that would cripple most, but he's found a way to lock it all away... for the most part. His return to civilian life has been rough, but he's found ways to keep himself busy, teaching self defense classes and sweating things out at the gym. Sometimes he finds a way to let go of things and have a little fun, like flirting with a certain sexy blonde that frequents the gym, but as of yet he hasn't been able to get the date he's been asking for... After losing her twin sister in an devastating accident a few months ago Zoe York has been left a small sliver of the woman she used to be, her grief hangs above her head, with every step she takes. She is trying her best to get back to the woman she use to be, but it is a daily struggle, one that wears her out. So she depends on her work-outs at the gym to re-energize her and keep her mind focused on something other the loss, and once in a while she even has a little fun. Especially when a certain sexy self -defense instructor comes around... This one had me swooning from the first chapter, I mean what is not to love about a sexy, charming ex-Marine determined to win the heart of the woman he loves, Gavin is definitely going to be hard to beat as my favorite Donnigan!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Gavin and Zoe's story, it had everything a good romance story should have and then some. This is a story about two wounded souls that are in search of a second chance at life, and along the way they discover that after being dealt the worst life has to offer it is truly possible to have a new beginning in life and find the happiness they so desperately yearn for and deserve. I highly recommend this one, it's sure to you leave with a happy heart, and a serious crush on a certain sexy ex-Marine!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
