Description: This is the 12th edition of a book that covers a wide range of otolaryngology topics in a concise manner for both initial learning and as a review of the current literature and standards.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a direct and informative way to educate budding and experienced otolaryngologists on the knowledge base associated with the specialty. These are worthy objectives and the book bridges the very wide gap between brief pocket-style review books and large multivolume educational textbooks.
Audience: The book is written primarily for residents, fellows, and attendings, but the language is simple enough that medical students may also understand and glean information from it. However, the book does require a base knowledge of otolaryngology to gain the most benefit from all the information, so it is directed more towards the experienced audience, a need which it fulfills. Some of the foremost experts in the world of otolaryngology contribute to each section.
Features: This edition covers all aspects of otolaryngology, an expansion from previous editions, which did not have dedicated pediatric and rhinology sections, and updates the oncology sections. The main shortcoming of the book is that the pediatric and laryngology sections are still quite superficial and brief, and there is no chapter on sleep medicine. That being said, this is still a valuable resource.
Assessment: This has been a staple on the bookshelves of otolaryngologists since the 1970s and this edition is no different. Updated with new information, extended breadth, and more chapters, it expands on the success of the previous editions and exceeds them. This is one of the four or five books that all otolaryngologists should have regardless of subspecialty or level of training.
