Description: This book presents the classic fundamental ways of knowing in nursing (emancipatory, empiric, personal, aesthetic, and ethical). The previous edition was published in 201l, and this edition has a new title that reflects knowledge development in nursing through theory construction and the use of knowledge through practice processes. A companion website offers supplemental resources for readers that promote active learning.
Purpose: The title demonstrates the need for nurses to use many forms of knowledge in nursing research, practice, and education. The authors appropriately and importantly emphasize the significance of nurses' use of multiple ways of knowing to ensure the provision of high quality patient care. The book's online format, with its interactive components (e.g., case studies and take away activities), adds value to the book, particularly in helping readers grasp challenging content.
Audience: The authors state the book is for "all levels" of learners. However, they correctly acknowledge its best use is in graduate education. They especially emphasize the imperative need for using the book in doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) programs where DNP-prepared nurses must be ready for sophisticated levels of knowledge use. This book is also well suited for nurses returning to school for a baccalaureate degree, many of whom have nursing practice experience. The book validates the ways of knowing they have developed and use, and illuminates ways to enhance and extend their ways of knowing. The authors are two of the best in the field of nursing.
Features: This edition clarifies use of the concept praxis to explain the process of emancipatory knowledge. It also has an increased emphasis on evidence-informed nursing practice. This emphasis acknowledges and supports nurses who are obtaining a DNP or practicing with a DNP. Assessment: This edition, with its new title, interactive features, website resources, and emphasis on the DNP, offers readers an exciting new take on a resource that is considered one of nursing's classics.
