Description: This is an update of a 2006 laboratory book intended for use in a structured training program for pharmacy technician students. It offers a variety of laboratory experiences that require students to complete pre-laboratory work to get the most out of each activity.
Purpose: It is intended to be used in conjunction with other books related to pharmacy technician training, referring in several areas to information that must be found elsewhere. The tear-out design allows for assignments to be taken from the book to be graded or used in the laboratory. The workbook format encourages students to write down their thoughts and answers.
Audience: While there are elements of this book that could be used for competency development for technicians already in the workforce, the primary target audience is pharmacy technician students enrolled in a formal training program. The open-ended questions and tear-out design make it ideal for a laboratory setting. The variety of applications (retail, hospital, etc.) also allow for the development of a broad laboratory course.
Features: This book covers basic interpretation of prescriptions, prescription filling, legal and ethical situations, technology, sterile and nonsterile compounding, and provides various examples from practice to help students retain the information. A wide variety of situations are covered, which will help the instructor cover various practice areas throughout the course. Overall, the illustrations/pictures are very helpful. However, there was a lack of discussion of electronically submitted prescriptions — most illustrations were of handwritten prescriptions, and these are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. I also would have liked to see more computer-generated labels that technicians would need to work with, selecting appropriate ingredients and matching them to the original prescription.
Assessment: With the rapid changes in technician skills and responsibilities, revised laboratory materials will be necessary to adequately train pharmacy technician workforce of the future. This book is a helpful addition and it seems to fit well with the overall technician training materials from this publisher.
