Description: This is the fifth edition of a book that provides a simplified explanation of the calculations used in clinical and biological laboratories. All calculations are covered beginning with simple arithmetic and continuing through quality control.
Purpose: This book is intended to help the student who has an inadequate background in mathematics develop the essential skills necessary to meet the standards for competent laboratory work in today's laboratory.
Audience: The book is written primarily for laboratory technology students but could serve as a refresher for those who are in the field (possibly going through cross training). This book would probably be of most use to the student who has had a very limited exposure to college mathematics.
Features: Each chapter begins with a set of well-stated objectives. Both students and teachers should find these helpful. Ample practice problems are found at the end of each chapter. Some of the references might be updated, and putting the appropriate bibliography at the end of each chapter might be of more help to the student.
Assessment: This is a basic but comprehensive text on laboratory mathematics beginning with simple arithmetic, continuing through factors, logarithms, standard curves, and quality control. Most students graduating from college in this "computer age" could learn from the section on significant figures in the first chapter. All libraries and clinical laboratories should have a copy of this book available.
