About the Author

Susana is a writer, designer, and aspiring poet from the beautiful Cali, Colombia. She lives in Miami, Florida where she enjoys taking pictures of sunsets, her orchids, and her two cats.

The bilingual author has an extensive catalogue, including Clara - Cuentos & Poemas , an anthology of poems for every emotion and season. Through this compilation, Illera Martinez recounts life’s emotional highs and lows in a way that could make any reader’s chest stir with that familiar feeling of nostalgia.

Her newest collection of short stories and illustrations, Lo que escribo en la arena (cuentos y otras cosas que se olvidan), beautifully showcases the author’s versatile storytelling abilities as well as introducing the audience to a brand new range of topics and emotions. Due to the text’s lovable relatability, and the raw vividness of the accompanying illustrations, Lo que escribo en la arena has captured audiences ranging from YA to Adult readers alike.

Inspired by her love for storytelling and children’s literature; Illera Martínez, in collaboration with Snow Fountain Press, published her first children’s book: Lala, a Different Kind of Lizard (Una lagartija diferente). This title was recognized in 2020 with second place in the International Latino Book Awards for “Most Inspirational Children’s Picture books”. This also became the first book in the Lala the Lizard™? bilingual series, followed by Lala and the Pond by The Rock (Lala y el Charco de la Piedra), which is now available.

In early 2021, she teamed up with Disney’s Publishing Editors and the Disney Story Book Art Team to publish the first Bilingual Pictureback® book based on Encanto, Disney’s latest film following an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia. El don de una familia/The Gift of Family, is set to release in October published by Random House Children’s Books.

Susana is a cultural ambassador of Hispanic Heritage Literature Organization/Milibrohispano.org, a non-profit dedicated to promote and preserve the Spanish language and support Latin authors in the United States.
