Description: This book presents both the surgical and medical aspects of critical care.
Purpose: Beginning with a presentation on pre-ICU care, the book provides a summary of core concepts relevant to surgeons, internists, anesthesiologists, or neurointensivists.
Audience: Students and junior trainees are the intended audience for this book, which features a multidisciplinary group of authors from academic critical care programs in the United States.
Features: Opening chapters describe the care of the patient prior to arrival in the ICU and reviews field resuscitation, temperature management, stabilization of military injuries, triage, and transport. The largest group of chapters describes care in the ICU, beginning with a broad overview of routine bedside monitors, physical examination, pharmacology, mechanical, and cardiovascular support. Other organ systems are discussed in turn. Separate chapters describe critical care of the injured patient and the victim of natural and manmade disasters. Concluding management chapters describe education, staffing, governance, and the growing literature on the post-intensive care syndrome. The final group of chapters describes procedures including vascular access, tracheostomy, echocardiography, thoracentesis, and cardioversion. The book is complemented by appendixes that include units of measurement, pharmacology, resuscitation algorithms, physiological formulas, and bedside statistics. Chapters are clearly written with line drawings and shaded tables. Each chapter contains a reference list featuring primary literature with citations dating to within two to three years of publication. The limited radiographs are of adequate quality. Multicolored line drawings are a highlight and flow charts reproduce well. A detailed subject index includes separate citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This book can be recommended for the descriptions and discussions of pre-ICU management and the post-intensive care syndrome. The appendixes and procedural guides are helpful. Content overlap is apparent when patients of differing types are discussed. For example, the description of acute kidney injury in the postsurgical patient is similar to that in the chapter devoted to this topic. Intermittent chapters on "controversies" sometimes seem misplaced. The depth of some presentations makes it hard to determine the target audience.
