Overview

Primary and incisional ventral hernias are common conditions often encountered in surgical practice. Because of the frequency of this problem it has come to be managed by surgeons in general, regardless of the type of hospital or the conditions dealt with in their daily practice. Laparoscopic surgery has demonstrated to have an important role among the different technique described to repair ventral hernia with less recurrent rate, less morbidity and less overall cost than open conventional repair, with all the advange of the laparoscopic approach. As a result the indications for this surgical technique are currently being debated since the advantages are evident and progressive implementation is ensured. Now is the time to analyze the usefulness, results, technical variants, anatomic, physiologic and scientific basis and implications involved in implementation of laparoscopy as the technique of choice.

Description: This book is without a doubt the most extensive collection of chapters addressing the techniques and science behind the procedure of laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. An impressive group of international laparoscopic surgeons have contributed one or more chapters on most every aspect related to laparoscopic approaches to abdominal wall hernias.
Purpose: The book is intended to serve as a comprehensive reference and complete authority on laparoscopic ventral herniorrhaphy. It targets every level of surgical training, and expands thoroughly into a topic that, for the most part, had been historically relegated to a single chapter in larger surgical textbooks.
Audience: It is designed as a reference for every level of surgeon interested in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair, and I believe that most every surgeon looking for information on this topic would find it somewhere within the 500+ pages.
Features: The book is organized into several sections surrounding the approach to ventral hernias, including anatomy and physiology, indications and contraindications to repair laparoscopically and the advantages therein, techniques of repair, results of repairs in larger series, and complications and unusual situations encountered during these surgeries. Each section has several chapters, all written by well known names in the field of minimally invasive surgery. The extensive discussion of the proper techniques and mesh considerations is definitely the strong point of the book. Unfortunately, there is no index for easy reference, an omission that is exacerbated by a great deal of subject overlap, making some topics difficult to locate.
Assessment: This is an important contribution to the field of minimally invasive surgery. As the techniques have developed in recent years, there has been a lack of well designed books covering the subject. This book can now serve as the model for this area.
