About the Author

FRANCES ANN DAY teaches Latino children's literature at Sonoma State University and conducts workshops nationwide. She is the author of Multicultural Voices in Contemporary Literature (1994, 1999) and Lesbian and Gay Voices: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide to Literature for Children and Young Adults (2000). Both books won Skipping Stones Awards, which honor social justice and multicultural understanding. Lesbian and Gay Voices was also an ALA finalist for a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Book Award.

This expanded version of Latino Voices-which detailed the lives and works of 23 Latino and Latina writers, native-born or immigrants to the United States-features 12 new authors, as well as updated information on the original 23. Day (children's literature, Sonoma State Univ.) has won two book awards from Skipping Stone magazine, a nonprofit that seeks to promote social justice and multicultural understanding, and she chose authors with significant contributions to those ideals. Although intended for readers of all ages, her book (comparable with Something About the Author) seems best suited for young adults and teachers. Many selected authors (e.g., Alma Flor Ada, George Ancona, and Diane Gonzalez Bertrand) write exclusively for children. However, most (e.g., Julia Alvarez, Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, Gary Soto, and Luis Rodriguez) write poetry, fiction, or nonfiction for all ages. Thus, this is an excellent source of information on Latino authors for those making the transition from late childhood to adulthood and teachers of children's or young adult literature. Each annotation contains biographic material, interview sources, quotes, photos, criticism, and extensive lists of each author's works.
