About the Author

Paula DiMeo Grant, JD, MA, BSN , RN, is a nurse attorney admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and currently is in private practice. Her experience includes litigation, mediation, and nursing disciplinary defense. Since 2011, she has been an adjunct faculty member in the Legal Studies Department at Hunter College, New York, New York.

Diana Ballard, RN, MBA, JD, has over three decades of experience in executive health care management in major health care organizations. She has served in a number of senior management positions including Chief Nursing Officer, Corporate Vice President, and Chief Compliance Officer. She has held adjunct faculty appointments at Adelphi University, Yale University School of Nursing, and the University of New Haven, among others, and has taught and published extensively in health care and health law subjects. Ms. Ballard owns a consulting firm offering services in business and program development, health care and health systems management and is the creator and trademark owner of CarePower, a self-improvement approach to excellence in customer service. She was affiliated as counsel to the law firm of Susman, Duffy & Segaloff, P.C., New Haven, CT, for 15 years, practicing in all aspects of health care law.

Description: This book describes how the law impacts nursing and the major types of legal cases in healthcare. The articles of the law and the case examples are excellent. An accompanying website includes an ebook version with hyperlinks to related articles.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nurses with needed information about the law and how it may impact their practice. Presenting the information online as well as in print is very helpful and allows for easy access.
Audience: The book is written for all nurses who may be interested in the legal and ethical considerations of nursing practice.
Features: The book covers the basic areas of healthcare law and then delves into specific topics, such as documentation, risk management, malpractice, dispute resolution, and even disasters. The best aspects of the book are the articles of the law and the case examples. The authors are very deliberate in providing the most pertinent information in a clear format.
Assessment: This is a wonderful revision of the first edition, which I also liked. This book is valuable for all nurses, and I wish more nurses took advantage of it. It is so important for all nurses to understand the law and how we can find ourselves in litigious situations. We must understand the causes and how to deal with them. The book is easy to read and the case studies are valuable. I highly recommend using this book in all areas of healthcare.
