About the Author

Nilmini Wickramasinghe PhD, MBA, who currently holds the Epworth Chair Health Information Management was appointed in Dec 2009 as a Professor to RMIT University’s School of Business IT and Logistics and is also a core member of its Health Innovation and Research Institute(HIRi), RMIT University after being a professor in the US for 15 years.   She researches and teaches in several areas within information systems including knowledge management, e-commerce and m-commerce, and organizational impacts of technology with particular focus on the applications of these areas to healthcare and thereby effecting superior healthcare delivery.   Professor Wickramasinghe is well published with more than 300 referred scholarly articles, several books and an encyclopedia. She has collaborated with many large organizations such as NASA and GE as well as leading healthcare organizations such as the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Kaiser and NorthWestern Memorial Hospital. In addition, she regularly presents her work throughout North America, as well as in Europe and Australia.

Description: This timely contribution acknowledges past difficulties with lean thinking and projects a diverse framework from which to integrate lean modalities more efficiently into healthcare delivery.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss a wide range of issues around the common theme of healthcare delivery through lean thinking modalities. The book meets the objective of providing much to many by presenting comprehensive information about key concepts, tools and techniques needed to accomplish the task.
Audience: It is written for anyone engaged in healthcare delivery systems with an interest in efficiently implementing lean strategies. Its greatest value will be seen by healthcare administrators and even information technology specialists as there is a great deal of systems information.
Features: The book reviews many concepts, strategies, tools, and techniques regarding lean modalities from various authors. It is unique in that it acknowledges how manufacturing lean thinking modalities differ from or apply to healthcare delivery. It examines these modalities in practice around the world, discusses macro and micro issues, and provides case studies as examples. The best qualities of the book are its comprehensive nature and its recognition of how the application of lean thinking to healthcare differs from its application elsewhere. If there is any shortcoming, it lies in the various voices of numerous contributors. Some illustrations are of better quality than others, so there is some inconsistency with graphics as well. Lastly, the book is so comprehensive that some readers may lose focus. Nevertheless, it is clear that the book is of great value to the field and a more comprehensive examination cannot be found anywhere.
Assessment: This book has great utility for those interested in a comprehensive review of lean thinking as it applies to healthcare. Other work is either less detailed or is conceptually too broad, simply regurgitating lean thinking modalities as they apply to manufacturing or administration.
