About the Author

Christy Nicholas, also known as Green Dragon, has her hands in many crafts, including digital art, beaded jewelry, writing, and photography. In real life, she's a CPA, but having grown up with art all around her (her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother are/were all artists), it sort of infected her, as it were. She loves to draw and to create things. She says it's more of an obsession than a hobby. She likes looking up into the sky and seeing a beautiful sunset, or seeing a fragrant blossom or a dramatic seaside. She takes a picture or creates a piece of jewelry as her way of sharing this serenity, this joy, this beauty with others. Sometimes this sharing requires explanation – and thus she writes. Combine this love of beauty with a bit of financial sense and you get an art business. She does local art and craft shows, as well as sending her art to various science fiction conventions throughout the country and abroad.

A vivid historical fantasy This was such an interesting historical fantasy. I liked the transition of Valentia’s life from calm and somewhat average (although her family is pretty well off) to the breathtaking and dangerous journey it becomes. She leaves her safe life in Ohio and goes to Ireland, where people are going through hardship and some are starving during the potato famine, to find a family heirloom and explore her Irish roots. Even before she leaves for her trip, however, she begins encountering barriers to her goal. It’s as though as soon as she makes the decision to embark on her quest things start happening to stop her. But Valentia perseveres through this, the dangers on the ship, and then in Ireland itself. I loved all the sights, sounds, and description, and I liked seeing Valentia’s character change as she comes to have a more profound understanding of life and of herself. Great book!

Beautifully crafted story of Valencia’s travel through her homeland of Ireland, in search of her Grandmother’s brooch – a family heirloom. Told mostly through the eyes of our main character – Valencia, the story is well-written and takes us on a descriptive journey of old Ireland. With its even flow throughout, Legacy of Hunger could have been written a hundred years or more ago. It’s refreshing to read such a beautiful story, one that doesn’t rely heavily upon action and hero. It is a wonderful story of life, family, and sacrifice. I’m looking forward to reading book 2.

Legacy of Hunger by Christy Nicholas is the first book in her new series, Druid’s Brooch and what a great historical fiction book. This book has a bit of everything in it, guaranteed to have something for just about every reader from adventure, drama, fantasy, romance, intrigue and even some magic. Following the story of Valentina McDowell, and her searching for answers about her ancestors around the time of the great potato famine that plagued Ireland in the early 1800’s. Valentina doesn’t really know what to expect when she starts on this journey to find her roots, only that she is looking for the brooch that her ancestors had, but the happenstance that occurs along the way gives Valentina the destiny that she wasn’t sure she needed. The deeper that Valentina digs into her families past the more that she learns about who she is as a person and how her life has all been leading up to her finding this brooch. All of the characters that Valentina meets along the way add to her journey in interesting and unique ways, making for a fantastic read filled with depth and fullness that was easy to fall into. The detail of this story was very much appreciated, as it made the story come to life in front of my eyes, and added a whole other element to the story that I wasn’t expected. Nicholas is a new to me author, but I am so glad that I took a chance on this book. This definitely took me out of my usual reading comfort zone, but in the best way possible. Her unique voice was only overshadowed by her ability to bring the reader into her world effortlessly while keeping the story at a strong pace from beginning to end. The research that she did for this book was definitely intense but it didn’t weigh the book down too much either. If you are looking for a great new author, with a series that I can’t wait to finish than this is one that you need to add to your reading list now! I can’t wait to see where this series and future works by Nicholas goes.

Legacy of Hunger by Christy Nicholas Four Stars This is my first book by this author. I have to say I enjoyed every part. Valentia should be settling down since its 1846 young girls have little else to do. She has a well off family. Her grandmother use to tell her stories about Ireland and a brooch. This gives her a need to travel and find this heirloom. She has a high cost to pay for all this. The author puts a lot of time in the Irish myths and lore. The story is packed with adventure and history. I love historical stories they make you feel like your in that time period. Valentia is very courageous for stepping out and going on this journey. I don’t see many girls in this time period doing something like this. She is taught to do what’s right and she follows this through the whole book. The history and Celtic aspect is so interesting and it made me want to visit the country even more. The characters made this a even better story.

I give Legacy of Hunger: Druid's Brooch Series: #1 by Christy Nicholas, 5 stars. Valentia is a fairly well off woman living with her family in the mid 1840s. She should be settling down and finding a nice young man. But instead she has this need to travel to Ireland to find her family and an heirloom her grandmother always talked about. So she starts off on her adventure with her brother and their help. Excited at first, she will soon learn that it is not like the books she has always read. The journey is much more difficult and Ireland is much worse off than she could have ever imagined. Will she find what she was looking for? And at what cost? This is a fantastic book full of Ireland myths and lore, along with the tragedies of what was really happening at that time. Valentia starts out as a fairly naive rich young woman who only really knows of society ways. But the growth of her throughout this book is amazing. She has a good heart and she never loses that. Her mother taught her to fight for what is right also, and she puts these believes to work in any way she can. She faces some horrible things, but yet she keeps going. The story and the history in this book is incredible, but the people are what make this book. Valencia course, but also the people she befriends along the way. This is my first book by this author, but I was amazed at just how well this book was done. Every reader should know her name. I am also a lover of Irish and Celtic stories and legends and this book wove them in seamlessly. You cannot have a book set in Ireland without have at least a little of the infamous Irish stories of faeries and such. For lovers of historical fiction, all things Irish, and those who love a strong women main character, I highly recommend this book.

Legacy of Hunger: Druid’s Brooch Series: #1 by Christy Nicholas is the first book in her Druid’s Brooch series. This is my first time reading anything by this author and I was impressed. I was a little skeptical about reading this book, but the cover pulled me in and I am glad that I took a chance with this author and this book. Christy writes with such creativity and the story just flowed. I am not a huge fan of geography, but this book made me really appreciated the time it took the author to paint the storyline. I do however love stories about our ancestors and our heritage, so this had me excited. My husband’s family is from Ireland and it just makes me want to explore this country even more. Valentina is going to Ireland not for vacation, but to find something that belongs to her family for generations. She also learns that there are stories that haunt her family. Will Valentina find what she is looking for? How much will she have to give up claiming what belongs to her family? This book pulled me in from the first page and kept me entertained all the way through. The characters were wonderful, and I love how Valentina’s character grew throughout the book. I cannot say how much I love characters that are not flat and add so much to the story. This is a great book if you love traveling back in time, learning about new places, and heritage.

Legacy of Hunger by Christy Nicholas is the first book in the Druid’s Brooch series. A great example of a historical drama this book will take you back through the years to experience the hardships felt all round. Valentia has always known about her family in Ireland and the hidden heirloom. Growing up in the tales it is all she can think of. Determined to learn more she travels to Ireland herself, expecting to start the journey of a lifetime. Only when Valentia reaches her destination it is straight into a nightmare. Plagued by a potato shortage, with many going hungry, Valentia finds herself struggling to cope in a strange new land. And then, when she finds the treasure she has been searching for it might be that the price to pay is simply too high. I found this to be an interesting read. Not a book I would usually go for I did find myself falling into the story. The writing made it easy to imagine everything happening and the emotions the characters must have been feeling. Although I probably wouldn’t read this book again - only because of the genre - I did enjoy this authors writing style and thought the book was very well written. For those that enjoy this genre it is a must read.

Legacy of Hunger: Druid's Brooch Series: #1 by Christy Nicholas is a period piece set back in the days of steamships carriages and proper etiquette between the classes. Unless you are a forward thinking woman from the McDowell family from Ohio. A well to do farmers daughter sets sail for Ireland with her brother and their two servants after her family loses everything in a hotel fire before they could all set sail on the voyage. Should they have read that as a sign? The trip across the ocean is tragic and almost fatal to Valentia herself but not as tragic as what she finds as she travels the Irish countryside. She becomes the voice for the people she meets and in the end is faced with a decision that might destroy her friendships forged along this journey. Being an Irish girl from Ohio it wasn’t difficult to place myself in Valentia’s shoes in this story, my only wish was that the story moved at a faster pace. I know it was meant to simulate the long journey they faced but at times it lost my interest. The book though was well written and an enjoyable read. The characters were likeable and well developed. I will definitely seek out more of these books in the future.

Legacy of Hunger: Druid’s Brooch Series #1 by Christy Nicholas Historical fiction is not a book I would normally read, but I am glad i did. I truly enjoyed the journey this story takes you on. The description and details the author gave us of Ireland were so vivid you felt like you were there. I have always wanted to travel there, so it made it that much more intriguing for me.This story is very captivating and written so well. All things Valentia saw and had to go through, really matured her along this journey and thoroughly enjoyed watching her grow. There are some wonderful characters in this book that you won't want to miss out on. The story flowed very nicely and kept you wanting to read more. This is my first book by this author and I am very happy I gave it a chance, I will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book to come out.

Legacy of Hunger: Druid's Brooch Series: #1 by Christy Nichols is the first book in her Druid's Brooch series. This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it. I can't wait to read other books by this author. I enjoyed this author's writing style as it was creative and easy flowing. She pulled me into a journey of finding a heritage that was never expected. Valentia sets out on a journey to Ireland in search of an heirloom and stories that are haunted by her family. What she finds when she gets there is not what she expected. What price will she have to pay to find the answers she is looking for? Are the consequences she may have to pay worth finding what she is looking for? I enjoyed the characters in this book but Valentia is my favorite. I enjoyed seeing her exciting for her new journey but yet confused on why this is so important to do. I enjoyed watching her over come everything that life has to throw at her. She just grew so much from beginning to end of the book. There are a lot of other characters in this book that are supportive and great also. I highly recommend this book. Find out how the price of finding heritage and an heirloom could mean to Valentia.

In 1846 why would anyone choose to leave a wealthy home in Ohio, USA to visit potato blight infested, oppressed, and suffering Ireland? For some reason Valentia McDowell is drawn there with the thought of finding family roots, a family brooch and whatever it is that compels her to begin the quest. This novel is well researched and filled with considerable historical insight, local color, and information about Ireland during this traumatic period in its history. The tone of the book is in keeping with the era it refers to and a lot of thought and effort was definitely put into the writing and editing of the story. I have to say that I never really warmed up to Valentia and felt that the rather abrupt ending of the book left me wondering a great deal about her and what, if anything, happened in her life to validate the many losses experienced during her quest. Perhaps this will be revealed in future books of the series. Thank you to the author for the copy of this book to read and review.
