Description: Leptomeningeal metastases are suspected in many clinical presentations in neuro-oncology. The seeding of the meninges by neoplastic cells is a frequent cause for clinical deterioration. Identification and understanding of these conditions can better determine treatment strategies and, therefore, a book dedicated to the topic is necessary.
Purpose: The purpose is to address a specific subset of metastases: those that occur in the meninges.
Audience: Neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, and neuroscience researchers are the main audience.
Features: This book is part of the series Cancer Treatment and Research. It evolves from the biology and basic physiology of tumor invasion, to the different forms of treatment, including new modes of drug delivery to the central nervous system. Inrathecal therapy, whole brain radiation, and novel wafers and antiproliferative agents are discussed in detail. Pictures are presented when needed, the text is clear, and the references up-to-date.
Assessment: This is a good book for institutions with a strong academic neuro-oncology program. It should also be an integral part of any good neuroscience library.
