What do you do when you can't save the one you love?

Sophie can't survive without control. Growing up with an alcoholic father, she craves the discipline of gymnastics. Feeling lost on a brand new college campus, she lets loose for the first time in her life. But with freedom comes consequences. Is one night everything she hopes? Or will she become her own worst nightmare?

Kipton's one year away from graduation. He's never thought beyond a one night stand until meeting his sister's new roommate. Finally setting his sights on the girl he can't resist, he's more determined than ever when she won't give in to his persuasions. He's always gotten the girl, and he's not about to give up without a fight.

Will Sophie be able to salvage her dreams and wage a war against her own vices? Can she finally let love in? Or will history repeat itself causing her to self-destruct?

Lighter isn't your typical college romance. Darkness suffocates, dreams are dashed, and battles are lost. Love takes on a whole new meaning.

I started to rate this lower and then I thought what more did I want from this read and I really couldn't think of anything. This author knows how to make you dig deep to understand and absorb her characters. Sophie, well she's a mess, with good reason. Her parents have done a great job of making her take the fall for all of their shortcomings and yeah it's a doosy. They inflict emotional abuse and so much more on her along with lies and blame and yup guilt for even being alive. Arriving and meeting her awesome new roomie and her brother at her new college sets her up for . . . well for everything. Nope no spoilers here. Ms Riley takes us into the mind of a girl that has turned all her pain inside and purges to find her peace. The issue is handled well and with tact. Sophie is a lost soul, tossed out when she was no longer needed. I don't agree with a lot of her decisions but then again I am not her. Great story for an amazing author.

By the end of the first chapter, I was completely entralled with Lighter. There was an abundance of turmoil and depth to this story right from the start. Sophie had been through so much in her life and I was eager to see her overcome it all. Life always has a tendency of trying to get in the way of the best laid intentions and plans, and Sophie's life and circumstances were no different. Even knowing what was at stake, she's only human. There were many obstacles to be had, both internal and external. Kipton did his best to be there every step of the way, but of course even that couldn't be easy. Sophie's personal expectations made accepting him and his feelings very difficult. Luckily Kipton was determined to break through her walls. When Sophie began to open up about her fears and feelings, it really showed how deeply she had been broken by events in the past. I wanted to reach into the book and hug her many times. And just like Kipton and Cara, I was always afraid she would regress at the next stumbling block. Finding a balance between trust and fear was a struggle, even for me as the reader. The truths that came out when Sophie went home for Thanksgiving break were total shockers that I didn't see coming! I felt all the hurt and anger that she did and I hated the possibility of a setback. When she finally reached out to Kipton and went home with him to find more surprises (of a better nature), I felt absolutely thrilled at her prospects for the future. When she could take no more, it was very scary. Yet, watching her work hard to heal and be better was beautiful and affirming. Sophie was definitely one of the strongest characters I have ever read and I was touched deeply by her story.

Broken but resilient is the best way to describe Sophie. She has endured a life where love is not something given freely and everything she attempts to do to earn love fails. Her father is an alcoholic and an emotional abuser, never showing her affection and always referring to Sophie as a mistake. Her mother tries to provide some balance in this world of chaos and gets her involved in gymnastics which becomes her solace. Kipton didn't expect to be a one-woman man but meeting Sophie shifts his world in a wonderful way. As Kipton pursues Sophie, her struggle to fight the demons of her past that built so many insecurities within her start to take over. Will she get help in time? Then Thanksgiving break happens and her mother drops a huge bomb on Sophie, how will she recover? You can't help but want Sophie to fight her way through all the crap she has endured. She has incredible strength and finds something she never thought she would have with Kipton and his family which is everything I wanted for her.

* I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. * “Beneath the surface, I’m scarred and broken; a much darker version of the girl I once was.” - This quote is just one of many that Sophie has throughout the story. It is one that makes the reader gasp, become emotional and want to save Sophie right through the pages/screen of the book. Author Gia Riley has done an amazing job with this story - this is my first book by her, but it is far from the last that I will read.  She has taken some cringe-worthy topics and made them into an emotional, breath taking, roller coaster of a ride. She opens the readers eyes to topics that are difficult and painful but real - Sophie could be anyone that we know and that is what makes this book so much more real to the reader. The author weaves a plot so tight and so thick that the reader just can't catch their breath.  Every time the reader feels like they have a grasp on things, the author throws another twist, turn, loop or curve straight into the path causing it to veer in ways you never thought possible. There is no predicting what happens next, as this is one wild ride from start to finish.  The topics are hard, the characters are realistic and the plot is outstanding.  The reader instantly falls in love with Sophie, Kipton and Cara.  They seem become the readers friends as they go through the story with them.  Kipton and Sophie have a ton of baggage and Cara, Kipton's sister, is the light throughout the dark as she injects some humor into an otherwise serious book.  This book will take the readers emotions on a journey like never before - you will laugh, cry, yell, scream and at times gasp for air as you read.  There will be characters that you once loved and by the end you despise....and most importantly you will be shocked! This book has it all! The author did an amazing job with the entire book and I am looking forward to reading the next one to see what happens to Sophie, Cara, Drew and Kipton.  Make sure you add this to your TBR list as you won't want to miss out on this amazing book, journey or ride that the author will take you on!  Enjoy, but be prepared and have some tissues nearby - you may need them (and when I say may, I mean you WILL! ***Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official.  ***

This story is about a woman named Sophie who wants to leave the harshness of her life behind and begin with a fresh start. She decides to move away for college on a Gymnastics scholarship since the sport is what she feels is the only thing that saved her from her misery at home. She meets Cara, Kipton, and Drew when she arrives and they become friends quickly. With her being new to relationships, she is afraid to let herself continue letting them in, afraid of allowing her heart to trust these new friends of hers. She must make that choice one way or another as her past comes barreling back, threatening to take her to that dark and awful place where love was completely obsolete. Cara’s character was my favorite because, even though the story is not centered around her, she brings some fresh new perspective to Sophie’s life. While Cara is wild and open sometimes, coming from a wealthy southern family, they shares a lot of common interests that draws Sophie in. Drew is the resident adviser and Kipton is Cara’s brother. I really liked reading about both men because their mannerisms and gentleness are a little contradictory to some of the other men that both women run into on campus. Overall, I found that this story was very compelling and I enjoyed reading it. Some of the emotional struggles are a little difficult to read due to the content; however, back-stories are always a must in my opinion. It allows the reader to fully understand or comprehend what the author is trying to convey with the character’s lives. I recommend this novel, but feel that it targets women more than men since the read is emotional and deals with Sophie finding herself. I give this story five stars because it is well written, creative and I love stories that I can relate to.

I don't even know where to begin!! My heart and my stomach are one jumbled mess. I have tears streaming down my face and I finished the book a good 5-10 minutes ago. To say that I connected or related to Sophie would be an understatement. Gia has written an amazingly beautiful, flawed character that you just want to reach through the book, grab her, and hug her. I wanted to tell her it's all going to be ok. When an author can write characters that grab you and wring the tears and emotions out of you...wow. Just wow. Kipton. Oh my word, Kipton!! What a sweet man!! Every girl needs a Kippy. His patience and level of caring toward Sophie (and his sister!!)...there aren't any limits to how far he'll go for them. This was my first book by Gia...and now I feel the need to binge read everything she has out there. Grocery list? I'll take it. There are only a handful of authors I feel this strongly about..and Gia just landed among them. Lighter IS my favorite book of the year. It will take A LOT to top it. The beautiful and absolutely gut-wrenching story will stay with me forever. Thank you, Gia. You have no idea how impactful this story is going to be, for a ton of women and young women alike! <3
