Lightning Effects on Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites: Damage Behavior, Mechanisms, and Simulation
This book presents the culmination of many years of research by the author’s team on the direct lightning damage effects on CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer). It integrates extensive experimental data with simulation results to provide a comprehensive investigation into lightning-induced damage in CFRP materials.

The book analyzes the electrical response and thermo-electric effects of CFRP under lightning current components, and establishes a multi-physical field coupling damage model based on arc-thermal-electrical-force interactions. This model not only advances the scientific understanding of lightning effects on CFRP, but also introduces new approaches and methodologies for mitigating and protecting against lightning damage.

From an application standpoint, the book offers valuable technical support for the aviation manufacturing industry, particularly in the design and development of next-generation aircraft and aerospace vehicles.

About the Author

Jinru Sun was born in Henan, China, in 1991. She earned her B.E. in Physics from Peking University in 2014 and her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2019. From 2020 to 2021, she was a Visiting

Scholar at Clausthal University of Technology, Germany. Since 2023, she has been an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. Her research interests encompass lightning effects and electromagnetic protection for aerospace composites, advanced intelligent overvoltage protection for power equipment, and measurement methodologies for dielectric materials. She serves as principal investigator for projects supported by the National Key R&D Program of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Dr. Sun is the inventor of 44 granted patents and the author of one monograph and over 72 peer-reviewed publications.

Xueling Yao (M’11) was born in Henan, China, in 1966. She received her B.E. in Radio Physics from Zhengzhou University in 1987, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1998 and 2003, respectively. Since 2003, she has been a Professor with the State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment, Xi’an Jiaotong University. Her research focuses on measurement technologies for electrical insulation materials, high-voltage and high-current measurement and control, and the fundamental theory of overvoltage protection in information systems. She leads multiple projects supported by the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and industry partners. Prof. Yao holds 88 granted invention patents and has authored two monographs and more than 150 peer-reviewed publications.

Shu Li was born in Shanxi, China, in 1997. He earned his B.E. in electrical engineering and automation from Shanxi Agricultural University in 2016. Since 2020, he has been working toward his Ph.D. degree in the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. His main research interests include mechanical effects, damage mechanisms and protection technologies of advanced aviation materials under lightning strikes. He serves as principal investigator for projects supported the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and acts as a key participant for projects supported by the National Key R&D Program of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
