Description: This is an update of a 2010 book on the major topics in cell biology including cell structure, the eukaryotic genome, membrane transport, cell signaling, and cell growth and death. The material is presented in a logical order, beginning with stem cell differentiation and ending with cell senescence.
Purpose: The intent is to provide a resource for students in the health professions. With its clear writing, well-constructed online content, and abundant figures, this book has certainly achieved this goal. Each chapter is broken down into a logical outline, walks readers through cell processes step by step, and includes multiple examples.
Audience: This book presents the details of a difficult subject in a student-friendly manner. It features clear writing with well-organized tables and diagrams that illustrate cell processes. Cell biology itself is a broad topic, but the prevalent clinical examples provide a medical context for students earning degrees in the health professions. For example, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis are used to illustrate adhesion molecule deficits. Together, the authors' research experience covers a wide range of cell biology topics from stem cell and osteoblast differentiation to endocrine factors influencing the immune system. Their combined expertise ensures that the information in this book is correct and up to date.
Features: Each of the book's five units begins with a short passage detailing the goals of the unit and each chapter is followed by both a bulleted chapter summary and a set of review questions with correct answers and explanations. Chapters are organized in a logical outline format rather than a single block of text, thereby making specific information more accessible. Boxes throughout each chapter summarize major concepts and provide clinical applications. Labeled micrographs using several imaging modalities illustrate certain concepts. Assessment: In this reader-friendly book, the authors manage to explain concepts thoroughly without overwhelming students learning about cell biology for the first time. This is an essential book for anyone studying biochemistry, genetics, or molecular biology in a medical context.
