Description: This is a review book for nursing students preparing for the NCLEX-RN exam. It briefly reviews some anatomy, explains specific illnesses by system, and discusses medications used for that system. There are tables for specific medications that include mechanisms of action, side effects, and indications. The most important asset is practice questions at the end of every chapter with answers and rationales at the back of the book. The accompanying website includes an NCLEX-RN tutorial and practice questions. The purchase of this book also offers a free seven-day PassPoint trial, which gives online test preparation.
Purpose: According to the book, the purpose is to provide the most critically important information about medications in a systems approach. It includes a variety of ways the material is presented and provides a brief review of the illness or disease treated by the medications. It is a review/study book for certification exam preparation. Nurses have the responsibility of administering medications, thus, it is important to learn the information in this book. The only benefit of the online resource is more practice questions presented in a format similar to the NCLEX-RN. This book meets all the objectives it sets forth.
Audience: This book is written for student nurses or students who have graduated nursing school and are preparing to take the national certification exam to become licensed as an RN. RNs moving to a non-compact state may also use this book to study for an exam in another state. The title clearly states it is for RN certification. According to the credentials of the authors, they are both family nurse practitioners. Therefore, they have extensive knowledge and experience about medications and treatments. It might have been beneficial for at least one pharmacist (PharmD or RPh) to review the book among all the advanced practice nurses.
Features: The title describes perfectly what the book contains and is about. The organization of the book is excellent and includes assessment needs, symptoms of the illness, pertinent lab values, prototype medications, safety alerts, black box warnings, and practice questions at the end of every chapter. It resembles other NCLEX-RN review guides, but this one uniquely focuses on pharmacology.
Assessment: This book is needed. It provides an excellent review of illnesses and diseases as well as the medications used to treat them. The more nurses know about medications and why they are giving them, the less frequently medication errors occur. This book certainly increases the chances of nursing students passing the NCLEX-RN since about 20% of the exam is medication related. Other NCLEX-RN review/study books contain all aspects of nursing with only a small portion devoted to pharmacology. I highly recommend this book to students.
