About the Author

Born in Chivu, Zimbabwe, Africa,'Dr.'Jokonya'grew up in England. She has practiced both pediatric and adult medicine in different cities in Africa and in England. In addition, she has worked as a director for a clinic specializing in family practice for the diplomatic, international and expatriate community in Malawi. Chi has received a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK and a Certificate of Tropical Epidemiology from the Swiss Tropical Institute, Basle, Switzerland. Her volunteer activities are international in scope, including relief work in Haiti, as well as founding a trust to support a variety of social and economic development programs in her home district, Chikomba.Chi joined the faculty of MDFMR in Augusta in 2007 and is currently coordinator of the Pediatric Curriculum at the residency.

Dr. Sewall is a graduate of University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, and he received his pediatric training at University of New Mexico. In 1982, after spending 3 years in the Indian Health Service, he and his family moved to Maine, where he has been on the staff of MaineGeneral Medical Center. He has served several terms as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics over these decades, as well as serving'one term as Chief of Staff. In 1997, he completed work on an MPH degree from Harvard School of Public Health. He is also a past president' of the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and he' teaches pediatrics to medical students at University of New England.

Description: Part of the Little Black Book series, this book sets out to provide short, succinct summaries of common illnesses in children in a format that offers easy reference and information for a primary care provider (PCP).
Purpose: It is intended to highlight the important clinical aspects of common pediatric topics and discuss controversies, current research, and new management modalities. The objectives are worthy, but the book does not completely meet them, as there is very little discussion of controversies in management and even less of current research and new modalities of therapy.
Audience: It is targeted at physicians in general and primary care physicians in particular, which is a very broad audience. The book may be a reasonable initial guide for a PCP but does not appear to have sufficient details and management advice for pediatricians. The authors are practicing physicians and well qualified to write on the subject, but are not nationally recognized academicians. However, this should not be of any consequence as the books in this series are meant for PCPs and general practitioners.
Features: The book offers an overview of some of the common pediatric problems faced by primary care physicians and attempts to integrate controversies, current management, and newer developments. The extent of topics and diseases covered is impressive and extends from congenital anomalies to cancer. Most chapters are well written, comprehensive, and easy to read and refer to even in a hurry. The simple, well-structured, and consistent format is easy to follow. The sections on GI, neonatology, and infectious diseases are well written.
Assessment: Although the book covers most of the common problems faced by a PCP/FP, it does come up short in descriptions of clinical pictures, signs, and symptoms in some chapters, and is somewhat brief in discussions of treatment options and plans for follow up. The book would be useful for a PCP or midlevel provider to use during busy clinics or in a general ER or walk-in clinic where a pediatrician isn't available. There are many similar short reference books that are comparatively more detailed, especially in the area of management and treatment plans (e.g., Pediatrics Recall, 4th edition, McGahren and Wilson (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011)). I would strongly recommend expansion in the area of clinical features and treatment options if future editions of this book are planned.
