Yasunari Kawabata nació en Osaka en 1899. Huérfano a los tres años, insomne perpetuo, cineasta en su juventud, lector voraz tanto de los clásicos como de los vanguardistas europeos, fue un solitario empedernido. Escribió más de doce mil páginas de novelas, cuentos y artículos, y se convirtió en uno de los escritores japoneses más populares dentro y fuera de su país. Su profunda amistad con el escritor Yukio Mishima, del que fue mentor y difusor, quedó registrada en Correspondencia (1945-1970) (Emecé, 2003). Recibió el premio Nobel de Literatura en 1968. Cuatro años después, el 16 de abril de 1972, falleció en su departamento a causa de una fuga de gas. Aún se discute si se trató de un accidente o del ejercicio de su voluntad.

Yasunari Kawabata was born in Osaka in 1899. Orphaned at the age of three, a lifelong insomniac, a filmmaker in his youth, and an avid reader of both European classics and avant-garde literature, he was an inveterate loner. He wrote over twelve thousand pages of novels, short stories, and articles, becoming one of the most popular Japanese writers both within and outside his country. His deep friendship with writer Yukio Mishima, whom he mentored and supported, was documented in Correspondence (1945–1970). He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968. Four years later, on April 16, 1972, he passed away in his apartment due to a gas leak. To this day, there is debate as to whether it was an accident or an act of will.
