Overview

This is the third volume of 1940s Sinatra radio transcriptions from the Vintage Jazz Classics label. These sorts of collections are pretty much for Sinatra completists only, but this is one of the more interesting ones, as it features a couple of ace rhythm tunes mixed in with the usual lush romantic ballads that were the singer's bread and butter during this period. During the 1940s, Sinatra's singing was generally more fluid and smooth than his jazzier, hipper sound of the '50s and '60s -- even on the swing and small-group jazz numbers that he often performed. That said, he was often considerably looser and more jazz-oriented on the radio and in concert than in the studio, as a quick listen to the tracks "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?" and "It All Depends on You" will attest. The version of "It All Depends on You heard here uses the same big-band chart as the studio one, but he's looser and freer here, improvising on the intro and leaving his official waxing of the song in the dust. It's these kinds of discoveries that Sinatra fans are looking for on collections such as this, and the CD delivers on that level. ~ Nick Dedina
