Betz (Lord, It's Time for Just You and Me, 2011) offers a sizable second collection of Christian daily devotionals and meditations on the Bible. This book's format is identical to Betz's first: Each daily reading begins with Scripture references and quotes, followed by an exploration of what that Scripture can mean in readers' everyday lives. It then gives practical steps for further cementing these lessons of Scripture and a short prayer to end each reading. In the table of contents, Betz provides themes for the readings, such as "Being in the center of God's will is worth any sacrifice" and "We are to make time to reflect on God's Word." These brief statements are useful, as they can help readers choose among the 60 stand-alone readings for the ones that specifically pertain to their own lives. Across the board, the collection is incredibly easy to navigate, and the readings are well-organized and cohesive. Each reading's "Plan of Action" section, for example, moves readers from reflection to practical application. These sections, broken down into numbered steps, are what move the collection from Christian inspiration to self-improvement. In one reading, for example, the author offers a step-by-step guide to examining one's conversations, beginning with the question: "Was it positive and encouraging?" In another, she offers helpful tips on how to get tasks done that are often pushed aside. At one point, she even includes a recipe for Chicken Romano. The author's personal anecdotes consistently elucidate the main themes, as Betz translates Biblical truths into a present-day context. An ideal collection for Christians seeking to maintain a daily habit of reading and reflection.
