About the Author

Dennis Carl Brewer baptized into the faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Tamarack Street Laurium, Michigan, in 1949. The church still stands today serving people of the Copper Country. Dennis began attending Sunday school and church services at a very early age. As a teenager, he was confirmed in this same church and later taught Sunday school while still in his teens. Dennis was a member of the now nonoperational Walther League during his high school years. As a lifelong Lutheran Dennis served as a deacon, trustee, and once was a congregational president. Mostly he savored being less involved and felt more rewarded for just warming the wood: sitting in a pew on Sunday mornings and trying his best to stay awake for the whole sermon and to pay attention to that sought-after message of salvation for all and its reassurances for life; knowing full well he needed to hear it more than anyone else present.
However, a lifelong believer in the fact that God was the one doing the saving work through Christ, Dennis did not always live a “goody two shoes” life sheltered in the shadow of the church steeple. He lived his life in the world and was not always of the world, yet at many junctures succumbed to regretful sin many times, as many other, perhaps all, believers do. His secular life included service in the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy, he attended college as an Army R.O.T.C. cadet and achieved a degree in business administration from Michigan Technological University and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He served for over 12 years in various engineer units of the Michigan Army National Guard and the State Area Command Headquarters before accepting retirement in 1993 as a Captain Engineer Officer. He worked for the Michigan Department of Military Affairs, Department of Management and Budget, and Department of Information Technology, before retiring again in 2006. Beginning in 2008 he and his wife, Penny invested the next eight years getting to know a bit more about their native land and fellow citizens by full-timing in their Fleetwood Terra 36T LX motor home, visiting 43 states before finding a landing zone in the desert of Arizona near Tucson, where Dennis is employment with the State of Arizona Air National Guard.
