Description: As an overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, staging, clinical management, and treatment of lung cancer, this book presents a logical approach, from the biological basis of disease to clinical management issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of the biological basis and management of lung cancer along with a summary of the most recent and pertinent literature. These objectives are certainly worthy, considering the pace of advances in lung cancer treatment and its increasing complexity.
Audience: The audience includes hematology and oncology fellows in training, as well as practicing community oncologists. While the authors suggest the audience could include residents in radiation oncology and internal medicine, this book may be of more limited value to them. The authors are academic physicians who spend the majority of their clinical practice in thoracic oncology.
Features: The book presents an overview of pathology, molecular pathophysiology, staging, and treatment paradigms. From my perspective, the best section is the one on the biology of lung cancer, which very succinctly provides an excellent summary of the current understanding of the molecular underpinnings of the disease. The diagrams are easy to read and complement the text well.
Assessment: This is a very good summary of pertinent topics for clinicians who treat patients with lung cancer. In addition to a basic review of epidemiology and biological mechanisms, it succinctly reviews relevant new information about targetable mutations. Given the breadth of the topic, the authors have done a very good job of narrowing the discussion to the important pearls of management with appropriate references highlighting the relevant clinical trials. It compares well to other sources and reviews of the primary literature (i.e. UpToDate, Cochrane Reviews) and is more readable.
